TRAVEL: Umbrella stroller in the airport

Would it be easier to have her in some sort of carrier (bjorn) in the terminal or an umbrella stroller when we are checking in/ tickets/boarding and stuff?

And did you even take an umbrella stroller?

Thanks,

Re: TRAVEL: Umbrella stroller in the airport

  • Lizzy - I just blogged about this very thing.  We took my cousin's Ergo with us when we traveled last week and it was SO much easier than dealing with the stupid uimbrella stroller in an airport.  I didn't have to check anything at the gate, which was nice.  The whole week we were in FL we used our umbrella ONCE when we did a little souviner shopping ... but honestly, I could have just as easily put him in the carrier for that as well.

So yes, #1 tip from my experiences last week was USE A CARRIER.  :)

  • I agree with Totty. A carrier would be a lot easier than a stroller. I don't use strollers much for anything though. Mostly walks.

  • I know people rave about using carreirs but we've always taken a small stroller to the gate.  It is a little more of a hassle going through security since we have to take her out of the stroller, fold it up, and put it on the belt, but it works out better for us.  I have heard there are some TSA agents that will make you take your LO out of the carrier when going through security.  We use the stroller a lot while we're away so we'd need it anyways.  When K was little and in the infant carrier, we used a Snap 'n Go stroller with the carrier.  Now we have a Mclaren Quest which I LOVE.  I can fold it and put it on the X-Ray belt with ONE hand while I hold K on my hip with the other hand.

  • Hmm..  good to know.  I am going to have to test out her carrier and see if she likes it...we never use it.  LOL.  She's so squirmy though...I'm anticipating kicks in the belly.  :)

I heard this as well, and was ready to take him out if I had to, but I had no problem at either airport going through security with Jack in the carrier.  I just had to take his shoes off, and both Ft Myers AP and DFW let me walk through with him strapped to my hip.  I was SOOOOOO nice.

  • I am going to agree with the carrier.
  • Is the hook on high chair really worth it?  I don't own one so I would have to purchase one on Amazon.

I'm thinking she could just sit in our laps if needed and at restaurants then the high chair is supplied.

  • I used a stroller and didn't have any problems. I needed it for our trip anyway so we just checked it at the gate and they had it ready for us when we got off. The stroller was also handy to hang our bags on when running thru the airport. I never used a carrier so I don't have any advice on those.

How much are you going to be eating IN?  The whole week we were there, we only ate OUT 2 meals (we had a full kitchen in the condo) ... so having some sort of highchair was important.  He also hung out in it while the rest of us played games etc. at the table.  That being said, if you're going to eat out mostly, I wouldn't go out and buy one specifically for the trip.

  • Hmm.  I'm thinking we will be eating in quite a bit.  It's a family reunion and she's rented a house for everyone to stay in.

Honestly, I would then Liz.  It was really nice for him to have his own little 'nest' (our nickname for it) to sit in so we could eat our food in peace.  And like I said earlier ... it confined him so we could also have grownup time for other activities as well.  I think I got ours at BRU for $35?

  • We haven't flown with a stroller in well over a year. We use an Ergo in the airport and at our destination. Works great, and it's so much easier than hassling with a stroller.

That said, I can't imagine carrying a toddler around in a Bjorn (you can't put it on your back, right?), so I'm not sure I would recommend that carrier specifically... but if it's just for around the airport, you might be OK.

We've flown into and out of many, many different airports in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, and have never been asked to take her out of the Ergo going through security.

For the high chair, we have this one: https://www.amazon.com/First-Years-Go-Booster-Seat/dp/B00005N9X5. (I got it locally at Target.) It attaches to an adult chair. It's not perfect (I far prefer our Fisher Price Healthy Care booster seat at home), but it does work well for raising her up a little and keeping her in one place. And it folds up super-small, which is why I love it for traveling.

  • Thanks ladies!  I"m going to get the high chair.  I found one on Amazon.

And I have a front carrier and a ring sling carrier that I can carry her on my hip with.  Not sure which one would be better.  I'm going to have to test both of them.  :)
