anyone read Devil in the White City?

It's my book clubs August pick. I'm not murder mystery/serial killer fan, so if this book is going to keep me up at night, not sure I want to read it.

If you've read it - thoughts?

Re: anyone read Devil in the White City?

  • I have not read it, but is my DH's all time favorite book.  It is about some murders that happened during the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.

  • The best parts of this book are the descriptions of the preparations for the worlds fair---sooo coool.  The murder mystery part of it is not particularly graphic or scary, more a summary of events surrounding a nutjob.  It's a great book, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I'm not a mystery thriller fan either. But the book is so very well written with all sorts of back ground information that puts the story into context that I couldn't put it down. The crimes are only a part of the story, the rest is a compelling social history lesson.

If you've read "Close to Shore" about the shark attacks in NJ (the ones Jaws is loosely based on) and enjoyed it, you'll like this.

Ditto. I thought all the facts about the World's Fair were more interesting than the murderer parts. It's a really good read, IMO.

  • I agree with pp's, the World's Fair info was very interesting, the rest is not scary.
