joely vs. jolie.

here's my dilemma:

i would assume that if people saw the name JOELY they would pronounce it JOE-lee.

if they saw JOLIE, they would pronouce it zsho-LEE.

am i wrong? please discuss.

    I would pronounce both as joel-y.  I prefer the spelling joely since jolie reminds me of Angelina.  Cute name!

    My cousin's name is Joli pronounced like joel-ee.  I think it is a great name!

    Though I've never seen it spelled joely. That looks incorrectly spelled to me, but my first language was French and it's the French word for pretty, spelled jolie. So that's why..

    i don't know about the pronunciation, but i would think about angelina with the second spelling. my vote is for the first.

    I've always loved Jolie... but you're right on the Angelina thing.  The funny thing is, I've never even thought about that!  Everyone else would, though.  I think Joely is how the actress who plays Julia on Nip/Tuck spells it.  That's what I thought of before Angelina.  That's because I watch Nip/Tuck and don't ever think about Angelina Jolie... probably the opposite of most :)

    This.  I prefer Jolie over Joely.  Joely looks wrong somehow and like a nickname for a boy name Joel.

    that's true, they are two totally different names. you should go with the pronunciation you want but i personally think joely looks made up.

    I agree that Joely is JOE-lee and Jolie is zho-LEE. However, I've studied French, so I think of it as the word for pretty rather than as Angelina Jolie's last name. But most people would be more likelyl to associate it with Angelina Jolie. People say "Angelina jo-Lee." So, a lot of people (including pp) would pronounce it that way and you might have to correct them on it.

    I think you are wrong. I would pronounce Jolie JOE-lee. Joely too me would almost be pronounced like a adjective...you know something is squishy or bubbly....it would be Joely...Joel-ee.
