I am so baffled by this. MIL and other ladies I know keep asking me if I am going to one of the baby boutiques in the area to get a "layette". I guess this consists of everything that I would need for the baby in the first few weeks bedding, towels, blankets, clothing, etc.
I just don't get it... why would I need to go to a boutique and let them try to talk me into rompers that cost $25-$40 each when I can register for all the same stuff at Babies R Us? And I already got bedding.
Is this something that is just exclusive to my area? Maybe it stems from the Jewish superstition of not bringing anything into the house before the baby arrives (the layette can be put aside and picked up right after the baby arrives). I am just baffled. Any insight?
Re: Are you getting a layette?
Nothing that specific.
I have blankets, clothes, towels, etc all prepared for when he arrives, but they're not in one big matching set.
I explained what I think it is in my original post.
This.
hiccup.
Yes, this is what I thought I would do, but people keep insisting that I need to go to a boutique to get a "layette".
Unless they are paying for it, go with your original plan. It will save you money.
huh. I won't say it's weird because it sounds cultural, but I think I'd stick to what you're comfortable with unless someone else is paying!
Funny, maybe it is a Jewish thing. My aunt and uncle want desperately to buy us a layette...from Saks. WTF?! Why would a newborn need clothes that are more expensive than my own?
I am of the opinion that if people want to buy you stuff, then just accept it. While I think it's a huge waste of money, I'm not about to turn down very generous gifts from family members.
In my bag: Canon 60D, 50mm 1.4, Tamron 28-75 2.8, 430exii
I first heard the term "layette" when we started registering, in that BRU has a layette section. But we're definitely not getting matching items or anything.
