Are you getting a layette?

I am so baffled by this.  MIL and other ladies I know keep asking me if I am going to one of the baby boutiques in the area to get a "layette".  I guess this consists of everything that I would need for the baby in the first few weeks bedding, towels, blankets, clothing, etc.

I just don't get it... why would I need to go to a boutique and let them try to talk me into rompers that cost $25-$40 each when I can register for all the same stuff at Babies R Us? And I already got bedding.

Is this something that is just exclusive to my area?  Maybe it stems from the Jewish superstition of not bringing anything into the house before the baby arrives (the layette can be put aside and picked up right after the baby arrives).  I am just baffled.  Any insight?

  • Nothing that specific.

I have blankets, clothes, towels, etc all prepared for when he arrives, but they're not in one big matching set.

Yes, this is what I thought I would do, but people keep insisting that I need to go to a boutique to get a "layette".

Unless they are paying for it, go with your original plan.  It will save you money.

huh.  I won't say it's weird because it sounds cultural, but I think I'd stick to what you're comfortable with unless someone else is paying!

  • I agree with pp's.  Unless someone offers to pay for it all, I would stick with your original plan of getting the necessities fron Babies R Us.

  • I'm pretty sure it because you are Jewish. I grew up in Manalapan and heard all about layettes. Not so much since I have moved! I think it's directly related to the superstition of not having anything in the house until baby actually arrives- then it is all supplied in one simple bundle (usually by one of the g-mas). Unless someone else is offering to pay for it- then do it how ever you'd like!

  • i'm confused as well about what i need to be getting for the baby and keep hearing the term layette.
  • Funny, maybe it is a Jewish thing.  My aunt and uncle want desperately to buy us a layette...from Saks.  WTF?!  Why would a newborn need clothes that are more expensive than my own?

I am of the opinion that if people want to buy you stuff, then just accept it.  While I think it's a huge waste of money, I'm not about to turn down very generous gifts from family members.

  • I have never heard of this before...Must just be your area....
  • wow...layette...there's a word I haven't heard in a while. I think its cultural and regional. I grew up in PA and am pretty familiar with what a layette is. But, I live in VA now and I haven't seen one anywhere. I know a layette used to be the must have thing years ago but seems to have begun to fall out of favor in more recent times. Unless someone is offering to buy you a complete one and just needs you to pick it out, i say go with your plan and register at Babies R Us.

  • I first heard the term "layette" when we started registering, in that BRU has a layette section. But we're definitely not getting matching items or anything.

  • Personally I think its just another fancy ploy in the baby marketing scheme to get people all hyped up about getting things they don't need... i'm sure I will be getting a bunch of those types of items from my showers and what I don't get from gifts I will fill in the missing items as we see fit!
