Baby Names

DH vs Me

My DH wants to name our son Harrison after his grandfather (Harry & he never met the man).  At first I liked the name a lot.  Then my MIL started to refer to the baby as "Lil Harry."  I do NOT like the name Harry at all.  I think of a hairy creep.  I tried to tell her that we're not shortening the name, and she basically told me that she was going to call him Harry no matter what.  I could go w/ a nickname like Harris...but I just don't know. Am I being hormonal? My DH thinks this is nuts.

Re: DH vs Me

  • No matter what your baby will be called Harry eventually.  That's what I'd predict... so if you absolutely hate that, then you can't name him Harrison!  Is it at all possible to use it for a middle name??

  • I hate when names get shortened too, you can try to fight it.  But you may want to just use it as a MN.

  • How about using Harrison as a middle name?
  • I'm with you - I like Harrison but Harry is NMS (although it's kind of cute on a baby!).  If you're worried about the nickname, I agree with using it as a middle name.
  • I don't like Harry at all, but LOVE Harrison. I think you will have to stand your ground and not let people shorten it....it can be done. I know 2 guys named Josiah and they do not allow their name to be shortened to Jo. Tell them if they won't respect your wishes then they will lose out. If it were me I would tell them when they can respect our choice and call our son by the name we gave him to call.

  • Ugh. I hate people. I think you'll end up having to use it as a mn or something since your MIL is going to be all biatchy about it. And Harrison is great. Harry...not.

A sidenote, I went to school with a girl named Harry! Her parents were foreign and wanted to give her an American name. Named her Harry, not realizing it is a boy's name. She was a cool girl though and I didn't see anyone bother her about it.

  • Go with another name. Names will be shortened. You can't stop the inevitable. I don't care for Harrison, but Harry doesn't bother me.
  • I agree with you...love Harrison, hate Harry. I just can't imagine a sweet little boy named Harry, lol.

I vote you're being hormonal. ?People - and the kid - will call him what they want.

  • My friend's boy is named Harrison.  He's 13 and nobody's ever called him Harry, b/c he doesn't like it.
