When is the earliest that I can get this done?? I am seeing family from out of state at 17 weeks and wanted to share the gender with them.. Can I get this done at 16 weeks or is that too early?
You can, certainly; but baby doesn't have much fat on it yet, so it looks much like a skeleton or an alien around that time. The tech at my 20 week u/s threw in a few 4/d pics and I like them, but they are pretty funny. I can't imagine them looking any better 5 weeks ago. As for the gender, some people find out early -- depends on the baby's cooperation and the talent of the tech. Usually 20 weeks is the way to go.
I just went in at a little over 16 weeks with a close family friend (I was too excited to wait till my appointment where I live now and its exciting to see the little one more than just what my doctor does) but we found out that it was a boy and she also gave us 4d pics. They do look better later on, however it was pretty cool to see him!
I've read that at 24 weeks is a good time for the u/s. I'll be doing one to confirm that we are having a baby girl, so I'll be going in at 21 weeks. I can't wait another three weeks!

Here's Jack at 20 weeks:
