Babies: 9 - 12 Months

6.5 months and no solids?

DD will not take any solids- at all!  We've tried rice cereal, avocado, banana, apples, peas, spinach and watermelon (watermelon was in a mesh feeder).  I don't know what else to do.  I've tried them at various times of the day, when she's hungry, when she's just eaten, with different spoons.  I have been making my own but I thought maybe I was doing something wrong so we've tried jarred food too.  She's BF and I know she doesn't need the food for her health, but she's wanting to nurse all the time and I really think she's ready for it.  My pedi was also pushing me to get her to eat and I really have tried.  Any tips or tricks would be appreciated... or just to know I'm not the only one with a child who will just not eat anything but BM.  Oh, and we've attempted almost every day for the last month.

  • i would keep trying everyday.  get a little plastic spoon and maybe even let her hold it to get used to it.  show her how you eat and let her put the spoon in her mouth.  i am sure she will warm up to the idea...just keep trying/practicing :)

  • We were not into solids at that age at all. I might try every 2 or 3 days - don't push too hard. She'll come around. DS didn't really get them every day until about 7.5 months.

  • DD hates purees. It is so hit or miss with her but I know she will eventually come around, I hope. She will eat small bites of pancakes (plain), pita bread, watermelon, and turkey though. I think it has a lot to do with her teeth coming in though. She would rather bit on the spoon then try to swallow food.
  • SmileThe only thing I can say is keep trying. Does she chew at all? Could you dice up something soft like a banana? Around 7 months DD began to lose interest in purees, she likes to chew.

I was EBF my first year of life and my mum says they just gradually started me on finger foods around my first birthday(strawberries of all things!). I'm not suggesting you don't try, but just letting you know I turned out okay!

  • If it stresses you out too much, take a little break (just a few days, maybe a week).  That's what I did when I was having a really hard time trying to get her interested (and she was around the same age as yours).  A lot of the things she seemed to "hate" she all of a sudden liked, and became a very good eater, but that probably didn't happen until 7 months or so.

And I felt like you...we BF, and I felt like she was nursing a lot so I was pretty gung-ho on getting her some solids!  But, it just took a little while.

  • Have you considered doing baby led solids?  Basically it's giving her finger food and letting her figure out how and decide when to eat it.  That's what we are doing so I'm sure it will be a while before he really "eats" anything substantial.  Maybe she'd rather try it on her own.

Really it's fine for her not to eat solids yet.
