3rd Trimester

did you register for a breast pump/breast pads, nipple shields, etc?

Just looked at a friend's registry, and was very surprised to see that she had registered for the above.  Maybe I'm the odd one here, but I purposely left such "intimate" items off the registry, because it would be incredibly awkward to open up a box of breast pads at a baby shower.  I can't imagine writing a thank you note that begins "Dear Aunt Carol, thanks for the nipple shields..."

  • I did not, but plan to add at least the pump to my registry after my showers so I can use my completion coupon on it.?

  • No. I feel the same way you do.

  • Yes I did.  Most likely no one will get them for you.  Atleast no one got any of the nursing stuff for me.  But it was helpful when I went back with my discount after the shower.
  • I added all of this stuff after my showers so I could use my completion coupon towards them.  I did have the breast pump on there before though.

  • I registered for the pump.  I wasn't expecting anyone to purchase but I wanted it on the registry so that I can use my completion coupon.

  • I registered for them. If someone doesn't feel comfortable then they shouldn't buy them.?

My mother picked the breast pads and starter kit - excluding the pump. We have made it very known we are breast feeding - that's what breasts are for right?

  • Oh and as far as the opening of these things in front of people, I have to say this:

At showers, no one pays attention to what you are opening.  If its co-ed, the men could care less and are often either outside or wandering around.  If it's all just women and someone feels awkward over something that has to do with breast and is very natural then a big Hmm to them.

  • I had them on my registry (not any nipple shields though). I was incredibly grateful when my friends who are already moms bought me the items I actually need and not all the extra junk.

This. I wouldn't feel too akward accepting a pump anyway, other than just feeling like they spent too much on me, since it's the priciest item I registered for. The accessories I'll leave off until right before I use the completion coupon.

  • i put the pump on the registry AFTER my shower. i might have to send dh to the store to pick it up so i figured that would be the easiest way for him to be sure to pick up the right one. plus i plan on using the coupon
  • yes I did. I will be receiving a lot of gift cards. So it will be me who is actually going to the store to purchase off my registry.

I started to and then immediately took it off b/c I found it to be kind of strange and uncomfortable.

Ditto. I am planning to add expensive and intimate items after the shower for the coupon. No need to add them before if you don't want people to buy them for you and have to write thank you cards to family members for nipple cream, etc.

  • LOL!  The only thing I registered for of those items was a breast pump.  That's not embarassing to me and I will need one.  However, all of the little nipple care items and accessories would be a little too personal for me, haha.

  • I did and didn't think it was awkward to get pads at my shower...but they were with a ton of other little things. I mostly put them on there for the completion discount though, but was fine with anyone buying them.

    this exactly

  • I waited until after showers to add that kind of stuff.  I wanted to be able to use the completion coupon on the breast pump.
  • I had them all on my registry for my showers.  I don't get embarrased very easily, so it would not have bothered me to open one in front of a group of people.  I actually would have tried to make a funny joke out of it.

  • Nobody thinks bottles are a weird shower gift (or bottle feeding accessories), why are breast feeding accessories any different?

This is what I plan to do.  I have the pump on the registry, though, just in case my mother or someone decides to buy it for me.  It doesnt hurt.

  • No, I did not.  I find it extremely odd when people register for a breast pump.  That is something I will just buy for myself, thank you very much!  (And don't tell me you added it just for the completion discount -- you can add it after your shower and still get the discount on it!)

I have never seen anyone register for breast pads or nipple shields.  That is a whole new level of odd.

No, I didn't register for that stuff.  I mean, sure we know what breasts are for, but it's still weird to tell the world - hey, these are the nipple shields that I want!

My coworker was showing me her SIL's registry - she even had nursing bras on there.

Oh and to the poster who said that no one pays attention to what you open at your shower - that is not true.  It at least wasn't for mine.  Everyone was eyeing up everything I opened!

    Yes, exactly!!

  • Actually, I did put the breast pump on my registry as it was an expensive one and as I work in a school where people seem to like pitching in towards larger item bridal or baby shower gifts, one of my co-workers asked me for a hint as to what I preferred to get for my shower. I told her I wouldn't mind getting the breast pump as I didn't think anyone would buy me something that expensive at my regular shower.  ( I got a lot of things free from my SIL, so I didn't have a lot of pricy stuff on my registry) So, when I did get the breast pump at my work shower (there were ladies there), I jokingly said "how will I say 'thank you' for this item" and everyone laughed.  When I wrote my thank you cards, I didn't use the words "breast pump" but I thanked them for their contribution towards the gifts for the baby and that "these essential items will be put to very good use!"

At my regular shower, someone did get me some nursing items that I did not register for but am glad to have. I would not have any problem writing out my thank you note to her.

  •  I registered for the pump.  Everyone I know (friends, cousins, SIL, etc) have registered and received their breast pumps.  Maybe I run in a strange circle, but people I know are not at all weirded out by it.

  • That's funny.. I never thought of it being awkward to open up those presents at a shower, but you are so right. Maybe I should leave them off? But I agree that most people probably wouldn't buy those and it is good to have on there for the completion coupon!
  • The only thing for bfing that is currently on my registry are the little bags to store the milk in. I was registering with a girlfriend who just finished bfing and she told me that those were the best she found through trial and error. I knew I would never remember which ones she told me when I went back so I added them. The rest I will add after the shower, including the pump.

  • I already have a pump but I did register for the various accompaniments.  I don't care- I'm not modest at all and I don't think breastfeeding is something to be ashamed of.  It's not like registering for maxi pads and Tucks (which I'd almost be crass enough to do).

hey, last time I checked having a baby isn't exactly a modest endeavor... everybody at the shower knows you and your H had sex, and in a few more weeks will expel a human from your uterus.

  • I did, but you should do what makes you comfortable.

Same here. I had the pump, but I registered for the storage stuff and sterilization. I didn't register for breast pads and nipple shields because that did feel a little personal but everyone knows I plan to breast feed and pumping is inevitable if you're going back to work.

  • I think it is only as awkward as you let it be.  You need them and will be using them, it's no surprise so if someone wants to buy them for you then great.  I told my mother to get me all of my BF items becuas the item on my registry she wanted to buy got purchased before we even sent invites out.
