  • You'll be fine.  With well-timed antibiotics during labor, the chances of baby contracting GBS disease are .025%, and a quarter of those are in preemies.

If you're having an epidural, they'll be setting you up with an IV regardless, so you'll just get the antibiotics through there, but if you don't want one, request a heplock instead.

  • I had it with DS....they just hooked me up to IV antibiotics during labor, no big deal really.  Even if you don't have the antibiotics there is a very slim chance of the baby getting an infection or having problems from it but it's just one of those precautions they have to take.  You and LO will be just fine :)  GL!
  • Not a big deal.  The main thing is that you got tested and the dr knows to give you the antibiotics.  With the antibiotics, LO has almost no chance of having any problems at all.  Talk to your dr at the next visit and let him tell you when he wants you to come in during labor (you aren't able to labor at home as long if you are GBS+ because you need to get the antibiotics)
  • I tested positive with DS and everything was fine. In fact, it was pretty much off my radar when I was in labor. They reminded me that I needed the antibiotics when I got there and that was really the last I remember hearing about it.
  • I tested positive with DS1.  It's really no big deal, as long as you/your doc know about it and you get the antibiotics.  When your water breaks, you will need to get to the hospital right away for the IV antibiotics rather than laboring at home like a lot of women want to do.  That's really the biggest change for GBS+ ladies.

  • It doesn't take long for the antibiotics to be administered and it is really no big deal.  I found out while I was in labor that I tested positive (was tested 2 days before going into labor).  I have a history of fast births so they rushed to get the IV in and a bag of antibiotics in.  I remember looking up shortly afterwards and it was empty.  They told me that if I hadn't been tested, they would have put me on antibiotics anyway as that is standard protocol.  Better to be safe than sorry.

  • I tested GBS+ today too. My doc insisted that it is no big deal. She said 40% of women test positive, and of those 40%, if none were given antibiotics, less than 1% of those babies would contract anything bad... but that's without any meds. She said they'd give me the antibiotics and everything would be fine.
