your pedi & limits to whole milk?

At DD's one year visit, the pedi said once we introduce whole milk, we should limit it to 20 ounces per day. I am still nursing her, but while she was on a strike last week, she was drinking about 35 ounces of expressed breast milk per day. I am not really anxious to wean her yet, but am curious about how it would work if she's still drinking this much milk when I do wean her. According to my pedi, I couldn't give her 35 ounces per day. Any thoughts?

  • DD's pedi said 16-24 oz was good.. but she also mentioned trying to keep it closer to 16. Honestly, I think they kind of do it on their own. Just give them food first and they'll automatically drink less milk. And if they're eating plenty and still drinking 24oz milk/day, then I wouldn't worry about that (as long as there aren't constipation issues).

  • she's definitely eating plenty. but she can suck a bottle down like nobody's business, no matter how long has passed since her last solid meal.

I agree with Bim.  Pedi said the same thing 16-24 oz.  Caleb was taking 20-24 oz of formula and transitioned fine.  He became more interested in food and cut down his milk consumption on his own.  He now takes 16-18 oz each day.

  • I agree with PP's. As they transition they adjust on their own.  When we first went to milk DS drank a ton, 25+ ozs.  Now I can barely get 15oz into him.

  • my pedi also said no more than 16-24 oz of whole milk, didn't think to ask why.  right now i'm still nursing in the morning and before bed and giving her cups of about 4oz of whole milk at least 4 times a day.  She never finishes the milk but i'm so paranoid she isn't getting enough.

  • Once we cut milk down DD started taking in more solids.  We are down to three meals a day, with two snacks and 24 oz of milk.

  • Max of 24oz, more than that can cause anemia. ?DS was drinking a ton of formula, 35-50oz a day so I was way worried. ?The first month of so we were around 30oz and I slowly got him down to the 24 oz, some days more some days less. ?He also started drinking a lot more water so I found that he really wasn't drinking so much formula because he was just thirsty and not hungry.
