Can't find the answers to my questions

Hi, I'm new to this board but have been lurking for the past week. I found out during my third ultrasound that I am expecting twins, yay! Now I just have a few questions about what to expect during pregnancy.

How often are your appointments and does your Dr. do u/s more frequently or just use the doppler? If it's just the doppler, how do they tell the babies apart by their heartbeat? Different heartrates?

Are you doing anything special about eating or just trying to eat healthy and take your vitamins? At this point I'm still having alot of morning sickness so I can't handle heavy food but I am worried that I'm not getting enough iron and vitamins.

Thanks for your help. I feel like I am just worried that something will happen to one of the little guys. I know its a common worry but I am trying to find a way to calm down and feel like I'm doing the best I can.

Re: Can't find the answers to my questions

  • Congrats on your twins!

I saw my OB monthly until about 20 weeks, then every 2 weeks until about 30 weeks and then weekly.  I had an u/s at every appointment.  I was enrolled in a pre-term program where I met with a nurse weekly (separate from my OB appts) and they used the doppler.  They just relied on positioning to determine it was 2 babies.  Also, one of ours had a hb irregularity so it was easy to tell.

Most ladies will tell you to read Dr. Luke's book on expecting twins, triples, etc.  (I can't remember the exact title) It talks all about the special needs of a multiple pregnancy.  The amount of food she says you should eat is overwhelming, but it's a good place to start.

    Good luck with your pregnancy!

  • First of all, congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of twins!

My OB appointments were every 4 weeks in the beginning, just like for a singleton pregnancy.  But I also had ultrasounds every 4 weeks, so I had an appointment every two weeks.  I went to an MFM practice for my ultrasounds.  I was put on bedrest at 25 weeks, so from then on out I was going to the doctor every week- either u/s or OB.

I read Dr. Luke's book and tried to kind of follow her eating instructions ("When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or More" I highly recommend it).  But really I just ate what I wanted when I wanted.  At least until I was diagnosed with GD and had to go on a special diet.

    Good luck with everything!

  • I found out there were twins at about 12 weeks and after that I had an ultrasound every 4 weeks and saw my dr every 4 until I was 32 weeks then it went to every 2 weeks.  That is also when I started twice a week non-stress tests where they monitor the baboes heartrate.  She would use the doppler in addition to the ultrasounds during visits and could always find 2 seperate heartbeats - one baby was far right and one was far left.

I would take a prenatal vitamin everyday and just tried to eat healthy but also ate unhealthy too Embarrassed.  I was at your point when my morning sickness started to subside so hopefully you will have relief soon.

I found this board to be tremendously helpful for what I was going through at the time (pregnancy) and what to expect when the babies arrived.  Welcome and good luck!

  • This was my appt sched. once I hit 20 weeks, if this helps:

    20 Weeks - U/S, reg appt

    22 Weeks - reg appt

    24 Weeks - U/S, reg appt

    26 Weeks - reg appt

    28 Weeks - U/S appt

30 Weeks - reg appt, NST

    32 Weeks - U/S, reg appt, NST

34 Weeks - reg appt, NST

    35 Weeks - u/s, reg appt, NST

36 weeks, same as last week

    36 1/2  weeks- NST

37weeks -  reg appt, U/S, NST  (at this point, I had finished the multiples protocol!)

    37 1/2 Weeks, NST, appt

    38 Weeks, U/S, appt, NST

    38 1/2 weeks - NST

As far as eating, do your best while getting through the morning sickness.  The amounts of food Dr. Luke recommends are IMO ridiculous and unrealistic.  Concentrate on healthy foods and if you feel you aren't gaining enough, try protein shakes.

Thank you about the food suggestions in Dr. Luke's book. ?I have no idea how I could eat that much. ?Sometimes I am hungry and other times i am not, but she wants you to eat a truck load. ??
