Do you still have gates on your stairs?

We have only ever had a gate at the bottom of our stairs. When she was younger, we never let her out in the upstairs hallway unless we were right there with her, and now she can safely climb up and down the stairs on her own. We just recently took down the bottom gate because we're selling our house, and we realized we never closed it anymore anyway.

I'm thinking we'll need a new gate for the top of the stairs in our new house because 1) the top of the stairs is open since there aren't any banisters and 2) there is hardwood throughout the house, whereas our house now has carpeting which provides a little more cushioning if she ever were to fall. I know we'll have to put gates back up when #2 comes along, but I'm hoping we'll have added banisters to the top of the stairs by then.

So, what about you, are you still using your gates? If not, when did you stop?

  • We still have ours up but we have a split level.  He can go up and down the stairs okay but he is still clumsy and I feel better knowing he can't go on his own.  It seems like it would turn into a big game if he could go down them any time he wanted.  Since we are hoping to have another baby in the next year I would imagine we will just leave it up.

  • We do only in the living room to the main entrance.  We have a tri-level house.  We don't have gates on the other sets of stairs since she is never without us there.  She does still think she can just step off of steps and hasn't msatered going down them.  She thinks it's funny when we try to help her and she just tries to go faster and faster.
  • We do.  We have one gate at the bottom of our stairs going upstairs, but like the op not at the top.  She can crawl up/down the stairs w/o issues, and we don't let her up the stairs unless we are with her.  We have another gate at the top of our basement stairs (it's an entryway w/o a door) so we don't want her going down into the basement w/o us.  We also still have a gate up in between the living/dining room but that was because we didn't want our dog coming into the living room..so it kept her in the kitchen/dining room only.  We leave the gate there open so DD can come/go as she pleases between those rooms of the house.  With DD #2 on the way, we will keep the gates up for awhile longer :)
  • We do.  Of course, she's good at going up and down herself.  BUT, who knows if she'll get up in the middle of the night to wander?  (She's been out of a crib for a few months.)  And she does get up at night to pee... or climb into our bed... I wouldn't want her getting the idea to go downstairs in the dark half asleep.

  • yes, we have 3 sets of gates on our stairs and we don't plan on removing them anytime soon. i'm worried dd will open her room door one day, walk in the hallway and fall down the stairs. so we will keep them up for peace of mind.
  • No.  We took down all of our gates about 2 months ago.  We had 1 at the bottom of the steps to keep him on the main level and I would put one at the top of the steps when we were up there.

He's been able to climb steps since 10 months and come down them since 14 months.  Now he goes down them so fast (on his tummy) I don't understand how he does it!  Granted he's still in a crib so I might put one up to keep him from going downstairs without us awake.
