Parenting after a Loss

Swaddle weaning ?

DS has been STTN since he was 8 weeks or so. Last night I woke up at 3 am to hear him whimpering. I looked at our monitor and noticed that he had rolled over to his stomach. I went running into his room and turned him over. Now, obviously I shouldn't swaddle him anymore, right?? Any good ideas to wean him from the swaddle? I have him in a sleep sack tonight, and he's woken himself and is now wide awake in his crib. Help! :)

Re: Swaddle weaning ?

  • We eventually just had to not swaddle and let her fuss and cry over it.  After a couple days, she was fine.  I tried to not swaddle at naps and just at night, but that just made her more frustrated.

  • For a while we would still swaddle, but left one of his arms out.  (actually we did this for quite a while because he hated having both of his arms wrapped up)  Maybe you could try this for a while?

We sort of did this... sort of meaning he would wiggle one or two arms out no matter how tight we got the swaddle (using a swaddleme or snug&tug) so we would just wrap his bottom half. Than we were completely out of the swaddle for a week or two when he entered the 4 month wakeful... we went right back to swaddling :)

So not so successful. But he's now sleeping with no problems so we'll probably try de-swaddling in a week or so.

  • we would swaddle him a little looser to begin with each night and moved the swaddle lower on his body each night too. after probably a week or so, he could have cared less if he was swaddled or not.
  • We are in de-swaddling hell.  We've tried leaving just one arm out and both arms out and it is a disaster each time.  She will fall asleep in my arms, but as soon as I put her down she starts screaming and won't be calmed until I pick her back up.  This went on from 2:30-5:30 one morning.  We went back to swaddling after the first night and a half.  We're also dealing with some wicked gas and we think the swaddling is making it worse.  Even if she is swaddled she's waking up 5-10 times a night.  This has been going on for over 2 weeks.  I'm losing my effing mind :-/  Hopefully this is all conciding with the 4 month wakeful.

This exactly, except I've been in this hell since 6 months. We waffle back and forth because it never truly works. And now she's in teething hell so she's just not happy eithe way, plain and simple. I'm pretty much just swaddling her until her 9 month appt and praying the pedi doesn't yell at me for it.
