Has anyone ever been to...

Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard?

Either or both? Whats the difference in the atmosphere of the place? I am considering taking a trip but we have been throwing around ideas of places to go.

Re: Has anyone ever been to...

  • I used to summer there every year, and I have friends who have lived on both islands.  Martha's Vineyard is MUCH more tourist friendly than Nantucket.  MV has Edgardstown with plenty of restaurants and shopping, it has the oldest wooden carousel in the country (supposedly) and a gingerbrea house neighborhood.  They also have bus tours out to Gayhead to see the lighthouse and great beaches for swimming.  Nantucket is a much quieter island with bus tours and some shopping but it's less tourist friendly like I said. My family also stayed on the Cape and just took the ferry and our bikes over to MV for the day.

  • We loved Nantucket. I feel like you could do it in a day or so. It is a small island with lots of shops. There is a really cool whaling museum that you should check out. I also really liked roaming the antique stores.

Take the faster ferry, b/c to me, it is pointless to spend time on the ferry when you can spend it on shore.

I have never been to MV, but if you have any more questions, let me know. Also, if you check my blog, post titled Overview of the NE (in May), it kind of tells you about places we have been in the NE. PM if you have any more questions.
