detergent question

I know most people say oh use dreft for the babies clothes but I remember a couple weeks back people saying it was a waste of money and very expensive and something else would be just fine.  Was it any kind of detergent that is free of perfume and dye or what?

TIA!

Re: detergent question

  • We use an eco-friendly one that is a bit expensive- but I have friends who make their own and it is easy, cheap and great for LO's skin.  If you are interested you can google ingrediants.

  • A lot of people do free and clear detergents

A lot of babies actually do just fine with regular detergent

It's best to use the same detergent on baby clothes as you are going to use on your own as baby is in contact with your clothes a lot

  • I will not be using Dreft because the smell is very harsh to me so I can't imagine it would be good for baby. I haven't decided what detergent to use yet.

  • I have sensitive skin so I use ALL free.  It works great and is cheaper then Tide free.  I plan on using this for the baby clothes
  • Honestly with my twins I used the same stuff that I used for myself...I figured if their skin was sensitive to it, I would switch. They have never had any issues...so for this one I will do the same!
  • I've heard that ALL free is good, so we'll try that!
  • I used All Free & Clear or Baby All.. but I used it on all of our laundry for reasons the PP listed :)?
  • A friend of DH's gave us a bottle to try out of a natural kind called Sun & Earth that they buy from the local natural foods store.  It has no real chemicals in it and smells like citrus.  She said that they use it on baby's clothes (the back label even recommends it for this use) and also on the cloth diapers and it does a fantastic job cleaning everything without being harmful.  I'm looking forward to testing it out because she and a few of his co-workers sewar by the product.

It's a good idea to start with a dye/perfume free detergent just in case the munchkin does have sensitive skin... eventually you can test regular detergent and go from there.

You don't have to spend the money on a particular brand in my opinion.

  • As long as it's free of dyes and perfumes like Tide Free..then it should be fine.
  • We're switching from regular Tide to Tide Free. Since being pregnant my skin has become more sensitive, so we're just going to switch detergents for all our clothes, not just the baby's

  • I was told by the doctor and other moms that Dreft can actually still irritate babies because it has perfumes or something in it. So they recommended All Free and Clear or Tide Free, both of which are dye/perfume free.

    this for us as well.
  • I loved dreft, the smell is amazing! I loved the way my DS smelled when he wore his freshly washed clothes and blankets! I tried using our tide but his skin was too sensitive for that so we stuck withbaby all or dreft. Baby all is a bit cheaper but it's hard to find. This time we might just go to something organic since we'll have more laundry with a family of four.?
  • We use Tide Free or All Free and Clear.
  • waste o money...anything 'free and clear' is usually cheaper and better for baby than dreft .  Even though it's dye free, dreft has a ton of perfume, and accourding to our pedi, the perfume (not the dye) is what causes most reactions in kids that are sensative to detergents.

Same here. DS and I both have really sensitive skin so this is great for us.
