PSA: Do not add rice cereal to Similac Sensitive RS

Which already HAS rice starch in it. ARGH!

Our pedi recommended switching Miles to this, and said not to worry when I questioned adding rice cereal, which thickens the formula, to a formula that is already meant to thicken in the stomach.

Several days later and Miles is miserable. His poop is hard as a rock and he's drawing up his legs and screaming every so often. I feel so awful. We're taking him off it ASAP and going back to the formula we originally started with, the Enfamil Gentlease.

Maybe we'll also try using one of those thickening gels to thicken his feeds, rather than rice cereal, though he hasn't had any problem with it until now. Poor little man.

  • Poor little guy! My BFF is asking about this formula because her DD is spitting up so much. Other than the pooping thing, how is he tolerating the formula?

  • Poor baby!!!

DS got sooooo constipated from even a tiny amount of rice cereal. I didn't even bother to try it with DD.

  • poor guy! can you give him some water? My pedi is right-on with her advice except when she said 'no water' -- it was the one thing I ignored. At a certain age, DS was so constipated, I'd do a few sips in between feedings and it really helped him poop! I did boil/cool the water beforehand.
  • We added a little karo syrup when ds was on formula with rice cereal in it, that made a huge difference in keeping him from being too constipated. Also, have you tried Good Start? It made a big difference with my ds. Good luck, poor little guy!

Which Good Start did you use? I am curious to try but don't even know where to start.

  • We went through a bunch of formula's, and DS had a tendancy to over eat to help with reflux. His mood improved greatly on zantac, but he still had some trouble and when we finally ended on Good Start it made a big difference in his comfort (never really helped the massive spit up, but I don't know that anything would have).

We just did the regular Good Start, but I just looked at their website and the packaging changed, I don't remember all those choices 2 yrs ago. I would try the gentle plus one, that sounds most like the original GS that was soothing.

  • Have you tried the Enfamil AR or the Kirkland brand formulas?  Both of my DD's have had/have reflux.  AR worked really well for Ash, but I had to add prune juice to it sometimes because of the poop issues she'd get on occasion.  The Kirkland brand has been a godsend for Sydney.  She hardly ever spits up anymore.
  • Just in case you're interested....Madeleine went on Lactulose (1/2 tbsp. q day) and it has worked WONDERS!  It's not a stimulant but more of a stool softener.  She has to have it since we add 1 tbsp. p/oz. of Alimentum.

And, if you're interested, I have multiple cans of unopened Gentlease that I can send you since you're going back to it.  Just let me know and I'll send them your way.  Otherwise they won't get used.

  • Layla was also on the Enfamil AR and it worked really well for us. ?We couldn't hardly do Similac anything.?
  • oh no poor little man :(  can you give him a stool softner?  We had to use a thickening gel in my grandmothers food.  I am pretty sure it was called thick it

  • We tried everything (including gentlease) and the only thing that worked was nestle good start. There aren't (or weren't then) a ton of options--just regular and soy. We just went with the regular, and it made a HUGE difference.
