I was browsing on a nearby hospitals "wanted" adds and found this great opportunity to transfer to a smaller "sister" hospital that is located about 10 min from my home. The big, busy "mother ship" hospital I am currently at is about a min 40 min drive away and requires me to be on call about 2 weeks/month, 24 hrs a day, night or day. As I said this is only a transfer and I would not be "quitting", just moving to a different campus. But I am in the middle of my pregnancy and who hires someone in the middle of their pregnancy? I am aware of the laws against discrimination of a pregnant woman but they have ways of getting around that....making up some story about how I'm not "qualified" ( because inside, they know I will be taking off 2 months for maternity leave and they might not like that) I have no problem telling them " I am the money-maker right now" (DH is job searching) and can therefore not afford to quit after this baby comes so you don't need to worry about hiring me to work for 4 months and then me not returning after maternity leave. There is no reason why they would not hire me otherwise. I have experience and I am an "internal" employee who already works at another campus. All the managers for all the hospitals know each other and can easily email my current boss to let them know I'm trying to leave my current job. I don't want this to jeopardize my current job, like I said I am the main breadwinner right now. This move would probably be my last move for a long time. I consider this other hospital to be my "dream-job" and would gladly tell the manger interviewing me that I plan on being there a long time even after this baby comes. Are they going to totally think I'm ridiculous when I walk into her office wanting a job??? I'm thinking long term here but I'm not sure they will. What should I do????? Go for my dream job or play it safe and wait...ps- I could always wait to transfer until I come back from maternity leave at my current hospital but as I said, this is a "hot job" offering a $5,000 sign on bounus and awesome hours and in a popular area so I doubt it will be available in January when I plan on returning to work.
Re: Switching jobs mid-pregnancy. I need your advice!!!
I would go for the job in a heartbeat.
I started at my current job 16 weeks pregnant, now I did not mention it at my interview, but I did tell the first week I started. I also made it known that they did not have to worry about me leaving after maternity leave. I made sure to reassure them that I have every intention of returning and that I loved my job ( which is true for the most part) I left work at the end of one audit, and came back just in time for another and it worked out perfectly for me. I even got a promotion before being here for a full year.
You never know until you try.
