2nd Trimester

I need your advice!! Switching jobs mid-pregnancy...

I was browsing on a nearby hospitals "wanted" adds and found this great opportunity to transfer to a smaller "sister" hospital that is located about 10 min from my home. The big, busy "mother ship" hospital I am currently at is about a min 40 min drive away and requires me to be on call about 2 weeks/month, 24 hrs a day, night or day. As I said this is only a transfer and I would not be "quitting",  just moving to a different campus. But I am in the middle of my pregnancy and who hires someone in the middle of their pregnancy? I am aware of the laws against discrimination of a pregnant woman but they have ways of getting around that....making up some story about how I'm not "qualified" ( because inside, they know I will be taking off 2 months for maternity leave and they might not like that) I have no problem telling them " I am the money-maker right now" (DH is job searching) and can therefore not afford to quit after this baby comes so you don't need to worry about hiring me to work for 4 months and then me not returning after maternity leave. There is no reason why they would not hire me otherwise. I have experience and I am an "internal" employee who already works at another campus. All the managers for all the hospitals know each other and can easily email my current boss to let them know I'm trying to leave my current job. I don't want this to jeopardize my current job, like I said I am the main breadwinner right now. This move would probably be my last move for a long time. I consider this other hospital to be my "dream-job" and would gladly tell the manger interviewing me that I plan on being there a long time even after this baby comes. Are they going to totally think I'm ridiculous when I walk into her office wanting a job??? I'm thinking long term here but I'm not sure they will.  What should I do????? Go for my dream job or play it safe and wait...

ps- I could always wait to transfer until I come back from maternity leave at my current hospital but as I said, this is a "hot job" offering a $5,000 sign on bounus and awesome hours and in a popular area so I doubt it will be available in January when I plan on returning to work.

  • Since it is  a"transfer" I would definitely look into it. Good luck!

  • How's your relationship with your boss? When i moved intenally last I sat down with my boss and told him that I was interested in another section of the company and that it would be a good career move for me. After a long discussion and a full writeup/tutorial from me that he could pass on to my replacement he went to the manager at the section I wanted to move to and gave me a great intro which basically got me the job. You could do something like that if you have that sort of mutual respect and close relationship with your boss! That's always the ideal senario in my mind - plus it gives you a nice intro at the new place.
  • Go for it! If not you will end up wishing you did.-Good Luck!

P.S. Can you show some pics of your nursery. I saw the pic in your siggy and I want to see more!

  • It never hurts to put your hat into the ring since it is a transfer (and won't affect your leave).  If your boss asks why simply tell him/her you want to cut down on your commute.  Any understanding boss won't hold that against you should you not keep the job.

Can you talk to your current manager about this opportunity?  Tell them that while you love what you do, this position would be optimal because of it's proximity to your home, etc.  Having his/her support, may help with the transfer.
