How did you deal with too fast flow?

I've noticed that I get a significant amount more on my left side than my right (2-3x more) when i pump.  Lately at night, DS has been rejecting my left side and i think its because the flow is too fast once it goes longer than about 3 hrs without feeding on it.  during the day its not an issue...What can i do to help the situation?

  • you can try 'block nursing' however i wouldn't try that until you try lying ALL the way back when you nurse- that helps control how fast the flow is. use gravity to your advantage.

also don't pump that breast as much- the more you pump and nurse- the more you will make.

  • when you let down on the left side, try letting the brunt of the flow spray into a burp cloth or something for a moment before putting your ds back on.  you could also pump a little bit on the left side first in the night to take the edge off.  but this won't help your supply to regulate down on that side, so go easy on it if you try this.

also, like the pp suggested, i've heard to lean or lay back with your ds lying more on top of you--lets him be more in control of how much flow he's getting.

  • I would hand express (or just let it squirt on it's own!) into a towel until the flow slowed.  Nursing lying down helped too (make sure to put a towel under you - it's messy!).

By 2 months, he had adjusted to the fast flow.  Now if he gets sprayed in the face, he just laughs and goes back on.
