toddler feeding question

when you feed your toddler do you offer a little bit of all of the food items at one time or do you offer some of one food item first and then add in other food items?

dh and I do it differenty and I was just curious what other do.

Re: toddler feeding question

  • Normally, we offer Campbell her protein and veg first.  If she eats a suitable quantity of those "good" foods we offer her fruit and a slice of bread as well. When we put everything on her plate, she'll go after everything she likes and ignore everything else.  That usually results in a tantrum from her.  We like to avoid those and tend to work together now.

  • We fix her plate like ours with a little bit of everything.  I've actually never even thought of doing it differently.  She just gets a mini version of our plates and it seems to work fine for her.
  • I have to offer veggies first with Syd, because if she sees anything else on her plate (or in her future) she won't touch the veggies. ?

So we usually do the veggie, then the meat, then the cheese/yogurt/fruit (which ever she is having that day). ?

  • When I first started feeding DD the same things I was eating for dinner, I would give her a little bit of one thing at a time.  I tried giving her a little bit of everything and she would make such a huge mess, getting everything all stirred up together, and it looked unappetizing.

Now that she is getting better with self-feeding, using a spoon, etc., and she is getting very independent (ie. refuses all help with food), I now fix her a plate with a little bit of everything.  The only thing I will leave off her plate is fruit.  If I put fruit on her plate, that is pretty much all she will eat and then ask for more.  I give fruit separately at the end of the meal.

We do it both ways, but primarily one food at a time.  DD gets distracted easily with food, so we try to keep it simple and straightforward.
  • Not a toddler yet, but I noticed with DD that if it isn't a bright color, she won't pick it up out of the lineup.  So if I want her to eat chicken or tofu,  I have to offer it separate, otherwise she heads for the carrots or sweet potatoes and ignores the more 'boring' food.

I offer fruit separately and usually after she eats whatever else I had planned.  If everything I'm giving her is visually pleasing, however, I just put it all out and let her pick what she wants to eat when.

  • We give it all at once, but lately he has been eating the fruit and sometimes ignoring everything else. So we may be switching to giving protein and veggies first and fruit last.

  • it's so interesting to hear what others do.  with teagan, i give veg, then protein then fruit/bread, etc.  it drives me nuts that dh doesn't do the veg first.

with taryn, we just put everything on the place and hope/pray/cross fingers she takes a bite.

  • i give DS a whole plate of food.  he is a really good eater though.  today at lunch, he ate his green beans first before the grapes, mac and cheese and chicken.  weird kid!
  • Abby is poast toddler technically.  But we did it the same way when she was one.  We put everything on her plate EXCEPT fruit.  If we offered her fruit with her meal that is all she would eat. Oh and we also have to limit her bread/pasta or she would eat only that as well.  She likes veggies, but will eat breads/pastas and fruit over them any day.

*ETA- oh we do give her fruit, relaized it sounded like we do not. We give it to her at the end of the meal once she has eaten enough of everything else.

  • Little Dude gets everything we get. all at once. we are afriad he'll turn into my 50+ year old mother who still doesn't let any food touch on her plate.

    seriously.

  • My kid pretty much will only eat mac n' cheese and blueberries.  She used to eat a variety of things.  Maybe she hates my cooking? Stick out tongue

We try to give her the things she won't eat first.  After 20 minutes of full on screaming/temper tantrum, we give her what she will eat.  We're trying the whole "take one bite and you can hav x,y, z" thing now.  It's not been successful.

I'm so paying for the "i don't understand why so and so's kid only eats ketchup and waffles" thoughts I've had in the past.  I hate dinnertime.

  • katie, my sil went through that.  her oldest would only eat chicken nuggets and grits for years.  they battled and battled and finally the doctor said "at least she's eating".  she did finally grow out of it.  at least blueberries are a fruit right?  hang in there!!
