3rd Trimester

how long is an average hospital stay?

I am starting to think about getting a bag ready and was wondering about how long most people stay in the hospital?  I know that for a c-section, it will be longer. For those of you that have had children, how long was your stay?  Thanks!!

  • They told us 2 nights for  vaginal birth but it is possible to go home earlier if your doctor and the pediatrician release you.

  • I had a C-section and was only there for 32 hours (Csection was scheduled). The baby is required to stay 24 hours...but after that if your dr "ok's" you to go you are free. They cannot legally hold you. You need to ask though, they are not going to automatically release you early. Just ask as soon as you feel up to it and they will get the process moving.
  • The norm for insurance is 2 days for a vaginal, 3 days for a c-section.  The time starts when the baby is born, not when you check in.

  • Mine was pretty long with DD.  I went in Wed night to begin induction, DD was born via C on Thursday night, and they didn't let me go home until Monday.  The sheer length of that is one reason among many that I'm really hoping for VBAC this time.

  • I believe that I'll stay 24 hours after a vaginal delivery assuming no complications.

  • DS was born 2:37am Sunday, I went home about 11am Monday. Vaginal, obviously.
  • 48 hours for vaginal delivery, 72 hours for c-section. Our hospital sends you home the morning of your 48th hour.
  • I was there 2 1/2 days- DS was born at 5pm Fri- went home Monday morning! C/S...

I used almost NOTHING I packed. Stayed in my hospital gown, and didn't even take a shower 'cause I didn't want to stand up that long!

I used my chapstick, toothbrush, deodorant, and crocs. Didn't even use my Brest Friend nursing pillow- couldn't make it work right with the hospital bed! Pillows were easier!

  • For me about 1 to 2 days, depending on what time you deliver, I think.
  • My insurance covers 2 days for vaginal delivery, 4 days for c-section
  • I haven't had a kid but I know at our hospital for a natural delivery it's 48 hours and for c-section it's 3 to 4 days.?
