I have never done it myself. I usually get highlights at a salon, but since dying my hair dark recently, I am considering doing it myself. What are you experiences?
I do it myself all the time. especially because I don't get highlights, it's expensive to do it at the salon... sometimes I miss some spots and I always make a mess but I keep doing it so I must be satisfied. Haven't tried it yet but I heard Perfect 10 is a GREAT one to try Good luck
My mom tried to do my roots my Sr year of high school and she turned them orange. I will never try that again.
For this child I prayed, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.

Please do not use over the counter hair color. ?The ammonia level in box color can be upwards of 8-12%. ?High ammonia levels cause hair damage, dryness, color fading and oxidation. ?Also you probably won't get the color "right" out of a box, it can be blotchy, messy, smelly.
Just my opinion, but of course you know I represent a professional hair care line.?
My only words of wisdom is you cannot go blond from a box. Darker yes, not lighter. I do my own, and while I know its not as healthy for my hair, my hair is healthy. I would pair it up with some professional deep conditioner to repair any damage. Oh and buy more than one box. You will want to make sure that you get all of your hair.
Not sure what direction we are headed. Either way, I am up for the ride.

This is what I am worried about. I will probably end up going to the salon, as usual, but I wanted to hear success stories. I dyed my DH's hair in HS and it turned out BRIGHT RED. Not red, like a good hair color. I mean like a red crayon. It was horrible.
I do mine at home, but I don't buy from a grocery store. I go to Sally's Beauty supply store and buy the color and developer. It's pretty easy to me since I do all over color. It costs me around $70 to $80 because I have thick hair. I spend about $12 to do all of my hair and around $6 to do touch ups.

I've had mine done professionally a few times and while I love the way it comes out, it's too damn expensive. I can't afford to spend $150 every few months on hair. Mostly I do it myself. My hair hasn't fallen out yet and as long as I get it cut frequently enough it seems pretty healthy.
