Good things about having a baby in January?

Let me start by saying that I am glad, glad, glad to be having another baby, regardless of time of year.  But we didn't exactly plan to have a baby in the middle of a Midwest winter, and I already feel kind of sorry for my LO, who's birthday will compete with Christmas/New Year's, and who will have to celebrate countless birthday parties at the ice skating rink--if the parties aren't canceled due to snow and ice.  (I have a December birthday, so this was a familiar scenario for me.)

Just for fun, can any other winter moms-to-be think of good things about having a winter baby?

One thing I thought is that, since we basically "hibernated" with DD for the first three months anyway, at least with this one we will emerge from our sleep deprived stupor to enjoy a beautiful spring!

  • I am in the same boat. Due January 14th!! My birthday is in April so I have never had this problem!

  • My birthday is jan 11th  It does suck, but it is still really nice.  A really neat birthday party is having an indoor pool party at some place.
  • Not being super pg in the Florida summer is a huge plus for me!
  • putting your newborn in footed sleepers and swaddling without worrying that they'll overheat.... I swear I felt DD's neck and back 5000 times a day to make sure she wasn't dying of the heat.

Well, growing up my birthday is in June, and all too often school was out before I got to celebrate my birthday...therefore, I think a January birthday will mean bringing treats for the class (if this is even allowed anymore) and having a friend party.  I know how much I enjoyed that as a child.  Plus, after Christmas there will be something else to look forward to quite quickly!

  • 1) Not having to go out in the nasty Michigan winter weather to work for 2.5 months
    2) Hopefully we have a boy, because our nephew was born last Feburary and SIL has already offered all of his clothes (right size and right season!)
    3) Not having to suffer through the last months of pregnancy in the heat of the summer
    4) Being able to ask for any last minute baby items (that we don't feel like buying) for Christmas

  • Hmmm....

    Here are a few:

Your 3rd trimester will be nice and cool, instead of incredibly hot.

You're not expected to be in a bathing suit for several months.

Baby will be more alert for its first Christmas.

My SIL, who is a mother of two and an elementary educator, says your child will be ready for school when the time comes (she has one with a July birthday and worries about that).

    Blankets!

  • My bday is Jan 24th and my EDD is Jan 29th, so i think that is pretty neat. It will be good that by the time the nice weather starts here ( I live in Canada) the baby will be about 5-6 months old so he/she can enjoy it more! We can hibernate all winter too lol.

  • Oh, and I'm due Jan 9th, so there's a chance my LO won't ever get to celebrate his / her birthday at school (Christmas break).

  • Not being uber-pregnant in the summer heat is tops for me.  Also (and this is terrible) people will be less likely to just drop by our house without warning in the middle of a northern New England winter!  However, being due 2/8 the relatives are already trying to figure out when the heck they will ever be able to have a shower, LOL.  Thanksgiving - Christmas is not exactly the best time to have a shower, and I feel guilty that people will probably already be cash strapped with the holidays!
  • My b-day is January 21st and my EDD is January 26th.  We are just excited that they will hopefully join us in the month of January.  Almost my enitre family celebrates their birthdays in January so it just seems fitting.  I also think a plus would be the excuse to not really have to leave the house in the cold weather.  I also like the idea of snow...when we get it...and having them around for a first snow storm!  It always is beautiful!
  • I'm happy that.....

1.) When I'm inside hibernating with the baby it will be the dead of winter so I won't be missing anything!

2.)  When I'm at my biggest it will be nice and cool!

I'm in the Midwest too. I'm looking forward to hiding in the house with a newborn, not having to buy or use a stroller for a couple of months, and spending my biggest pregnancy months in cold weather!

I am a June baby and it's always harder for summer birthday kids to organize a party - everyone is always away on vacation.

  • You will be able to get back into shape before swimsuit season. By the time summer comes the LO will be the perfect age to take with and do fun things with.

    Good one!

  • My b-day is Jan. 5th and my EDD is Jan. 6th- so some thoughts:

-bathing suit weather starts around April- May

-start a tradition of 1/2 b-day celebration! and celebrate in June- I always hated having my b-day right after Christmas and getting those 1/2 b-day 1/2 Christmas gifts- so I am going to make a point to have 2 totally seperate celebrations.

-no Texas heat in 3rd tri

  • Since most stores have clearance on toys after Christmas, I have always been able to get DD awesome presents for less than full price.
  • Something to look forward to...After Christmas!
  • My b-day is right Feb. 5th and I'm due Feb. 6th... and I'm so thankful that it'll be be nice and cool here in Minnesota instead of a hot, sticky summer. Plus, I'm all for those few months that I'll have to get back into some sort of shape before the nice weather hits.

  • No need to wear swimsuit in the 3rd tri when I'll be roughly the size of a barn!

  • my niece's bday is january 13th. so we have a small dinner/cake with the family on her birthday and then she has a friend bday party on or around June 13th - her half birthday.

Not being super pg in the Florida summer is a huge plus for me!

This. My first two were summer babies and it sucked being 7-9 months pregnant in the Florida heat. I am super excited about being pg at Thanksgiving/Christmas, too.

  • Not being heavily pregnant in the Texas heat is big.  Like someone else said, not worrying about overheating the baby with sleepers/swaddlers/blankets early on.

Hanging out at home to avoid cold and flu season.

Having baby be a good age when it is time to plant the garden and at a fun age when summer comes so we can go swimming and play in the water should be fun.  And they may be walking by Christmas and will be old enough to participate in/have fun at their first Christmas.

Being school ready is great - my brother with the summer birthday had trouble there.

In Texas, winters are mild, so ice skating and such is no biggie.  We can probably plan outdoor activities like mini-golf or something with no problems - instead it will be nice and cool out.  Something to look forward to after Christmas and be able to round out a Christmas wish-list or get toys on sale should be nice.

For me, I get a paid week off work at Christmas and I should be heavily pregnant, so I'm excited I'll have that time to prepare for baby, since I'll likely have to work up to birth otherwise.

Not being super pg in the Florida summer is a huge plus for me!?

    ?Me, too!??

  • I'm due Jan 13. Babies in hats and all bundled up are the cutest!!! Plus the after Xmas sales for B-day presents will be great!
  • I live in MN and my bday is December 23rd and it never bothered me at all - I honestly loved never having to go to school on my bday, and having all my family around at Christmas to celebrate my bday as well :)  Now it is nice because all of my old friends who moved are back in town to celebrate the holidays and they can come out for my bday as well.

It's something to look forward to in the bleak winter months.... and really, it's not THAT often that people can't drive in the winter.

In the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter at all - as long as you make it a point to make their birthday fun, it will be :)

  • January is a pretty boring month in my opinion.  After New Year's Day, there's really nothing the rest of the month, whereas Feb. has Valentine's Day, March has St. Patty's, April usually has Easter or Passover, May has Memorial Day, etc etc.  Having something to celebrate in January will be really nice for that reason.

Things are usually on sale after Christmas for baby's gifts.

Not being hugely pregnant in the heat is a bonus.

Having time to get fit for summer clothes/ bathing suit season (which doesn't start here until mid May at the earliest) is a bonus.

Lots of snow related activities are fun for kids-- sledding, ice skating, snowmobiling,  building snow men, etc.

I am actually very grateful that my baby is due in January.  I was really excited when I found out.

    Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
  • I'm due in Feb. but I am looking forward to the cold. I'm always hot as it is and by the 3rd tri those hot flashes will be awful! But it won't be so bad because it will be like 25 degrees outside! Smile

  • I'm not a big fan of touching, so I'm super glad I'll be all bundled up in coats by the time I'm quite big- that much less likely some weirdo stranger will bother me.

Also, I'm due January 1st. I think it would be sooo neat if I had the baby for new years. How exciting is that? I could see what fun that could be as it got older. Who knows, though? Maybe we'll do a half-birthday thing, for parties. We'll see!

  • Also, they recommend not putting sunscreen on a baby younger than 6 months... we won't have to worry about this too much!
  • My oldest son's Birthday is December 23rd.  My youngest is January 19th.  My EDD is February 1st.  (And then throw in my Bday Christmas Eve, my DH's Bday in December too plus our Anniversary!!)

With us down here in Texas, I only see one of advantage of having Winter babies...I'm not huge during the really hot months.  (Although it's still unbearable now and I am only 9 weeks.)

Other than that, we are BROKE come December,  We have to celebrate my oldest's Bday either early or late.  By the time January comes people are broke and tired of celebrating.  But, despite all the "bad" we love having everything at once and being done with it all  and not have to worry about it for a whole year.

  • I am also excited to not be 8 months+ in Aug-Nov in FL!  January is usually awesome weather - a great time for outdoor parties in Tampa.  All the kids are back from vacation and in town too.  I second the fact that post-Xmas sales will reap my child better presents.  Plus, it's football season, so when baby gets older we can take them to a Bucs game for their b-day!!
  • My birthday is 1/17 and my LO is due 1/26 - I am so excited to celebrate my birthday month with my first born! I always enjoyed having a winter birthday. In elementary school I could bring in treats and have a "pool party" at the local YMCA (which was a big deal in my small town). In HS - I don't think I ever had school on my birthday due to snow days (sleeping in, always a plus to a teenager).?

I'm looking forward to spending next summer at the lake with a 5/6 month old!?

My b-day is Jan 22nd and EDD Jan 27th. That's just funny!

Heat is a big one for me (it's over the 100s here right now, I can't imagine!)

My favorite (secret) fantasy is opening baby gifts with a big belly on Christmas, and I get to fulfill it!

  • I am super excited to have a winter baby....in FLORIDA.  It will be a wonderful 70 degrees and I cant wait.  Oh and I am really glad not to be super huge and in Florida this summer.  It is Hot!  I do feel for you guys that have to be stuck in your houses all winter though I can see how that would be annoying.

  • I was wondering the same thing...grew up in Michigan with a mid-December bday and that was hard, people are always too busy with Christmas and then finals in college to celebrate. My EDD is Jan 20.

But January you do get the SALES and also when we're in our final month we get a few bonus paid holidays so less days to work down the final stretch. And no heat in that final trimester.  When baby is older, January is a great "back-to-school" time after the holidays so they will see all their friends. Another fun bday party when it's cold is bowling!
