High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre-e and ? urine test

I got to thinking about something and it has me really curious.  At my dr. appts my bp has been on the higher side, but not ridiculously high. Until today in the office it was around 130/75 since about 28 weeks When I go see my dr I have never had swelling or other symptoms of pre-e and my urine tests in the office have always come back negative.  The only reason I am being monitored as close as I am right now is because I told her I was having mild headaches and noticed my bp was a litle higher when I checked it at work one night.  She then admitted me for the 24 hour urine which then showed my protein at 403.  My dr. is very conservative and I truly think another dr. could just have easily said to keep monitoring bp in office and the regular urine tests they do at normal visits since my bp isn't ridiculous.  If we went by that information we would have no idea of the mild pre e.  She could easily have just contributed my bp issues to stress or something at my appt.  Do you think there are women walking around right now who have no idea they are at risk for pre-e bc their urine in the office is negative and they don't show any other "signs" of pre-e?  Has me wondering..if I had wasn't being so "proactive" or my dr. wasn't so conservative we would never have done the 24 hour collection, and would never know about the protein in that sample.

Re: Pre-e and ? urine test

  • I believe that with my first pregnancy I was probably walking around with Pre-e prior to knowing I had it at all at 37.5 weeks.  Although, my dr. did do the urine sampling and bp at every visit (and there was no protein in the urine at all), I guess she didn't think anything was too alarming to do a 24 urine sampling until she saw the protein at not a normal level (at which point I did the 24 hour urine sampling).  I don't know what a normal level of protein in your urine is.  But, my sister had protein in her urine from the start, but never had pre-e.  I too, like you, didnt have any symptoms at all.  I think the drs (at least what I have been told), wont really test you for pre-e until protein starts showing up in your urine.  One internet site said that in women that don't have the symptoms, it means the disease is progressing more rapidly in their bodies.  So, it is really good you knew what was going on.  I had no idea.

On a side note, I am not sure if this is your first pregnancy, but I am hoping to avoid pre-e again during my second pregnancy.  In a book that I have, they say to increase your calcium and protein to help with the pre-e.  I am not sure if it helps once you have it, but I guess it couldn't hurt to try.  This is a good article : https://pregnancy.amuchbetterway.com/prevent-preeclampsia-diet-nutrition/  Again, not sure if it will help you where you are at now, but it is worth trying to keep the baby incubated for a little longer!

  • I think it definitely misses sometimes.  The urine dip can be a false measurement depending on whether the woman is very well hydrated or somewhat dehydrated.

I agree with this - and also think that because 300mg of protein will get you the diagnosis of mild pre-e - if your urine is in that area and no other symptoms, I guess at that point the situation is pretty mild. In my experience it is so fast progressing that there is no way to miss it - it is just all so scary since it is such a dangerous disease.

  • My Dr caught my pre-e at 34 weeks but looking back I think I had it a lot longer then that. ?My bp spiked at 34 weeks but I had no swelling, no headaches and no protien in the urine at Drs appts. ?I had been feeling nauseaus and just not well in the weeks leading up to that but I didn't think anything was wrong. ? I was even still running (albeit really slowly) the day before I was put on bedrest.?

So, yes, I definitely think it's possible to have pre-e and not have it diagnosed.?
