I've heard people that use cloth diapers often comment that they rarely have a problem with blowouts. Is this really true? I'm considering switching our 5 month old over to CD.
We've only had 3 blowouts ever, I think. We use mostly pockets and AIOs. Sometimes it blows out of a prefold but stays in the cover (still meaning that there is no mess on clothes). We have had occasional leaking problems, but that is usually user error or a size/fit problem.
I should add that our poop blowouts were all a result of user error. Snaps got missed, front wasn't pulled up right, cover wasn't fully over the fitted, etc.
One of the benefits of prefolds or fitteds with a type of cover is the double layer of protection, esp. for nb poop. If something should escape the first layer, it'll be caught by the second. We never had blowouts even with the liquidy stuff. Pockets and AIOs have great reputations too, but they just have one layer of protction if blowouts are a main concern. Beyond the nb phase, they're all good, I think!

I was constantly washing my daughter, her clothes, me (if I was holding her), her swing cover, her bouncy seat cover, her excercauser cover, you name it.
I tried like 4 or 5 brands of disposables and nothing worked. Nothing. Not even close. It was awful. Then I tried cloth. I haven't had a blowout since. I use bumgenius diapers and love them.
We've never had an actual blow-out in cloth. In the almost 8 months we've been using CD I can think of 2 times the poop has leaked onto DS's clothes, but both were minor (and it was quite a bit of poop). Now that DS has stopped spitting up I never have to change his clothes during the day - most of my friends with LO's in sposies can't say the same thing.
agreed. I think his CDs have only leaked poop twice, and that was minor leaks. We've come close to having leakage otu of the back, but it hasn't happened yet. We started him on CDs at 3m, though - I"m not confident we would have had as much luck with liquidy newborn poop.
I have had occasional blowouts but it was usually because I didn't have the diaper on properly. If I concentrated better on the fit then blowouts were rare. If they occurred then it was because DS had so much poo that it literally filled up the diaper and then some. We had two days like that.

Ditto this, word for word. We have not had one single blowout since switching to cloth and it was twice daily occurrence in our house! I definitely think part of it is because of the elastic in the back of the BGs - it helps hold all the poo in.
My DD#2 is only a week old, but I already had 1 disposable diaper blowout. We had one massive poop in a CD that I guarentee would have been a blowout in a disposable. It was up to the elastic on the CD and she was covered in there, but it never leaked outward.
Re: Does CD really = fewer blowouts?
None.
It's so nice!

It's why we switched to cloth.
