Question about water breaking

When my cousin had her baby, she had an emergency c-section because she had lost the amniotic fluid. She never noticed it and she found out that during a visit to the doctor to schedule an induction.

There is way to know that you're loosing your amniotic fluid (apart from a heavy watery discharge)? I read in other post that smell diffrente from pee (someone said commet, other said ocean), Is this true?

These days I have had an extra discharge, nothing different that I have had in other occacions, but as I'm progressing in time I'm getting psicotic in this kind of things.

Re: Question about water breaking

  • My discharge is watery also and I'm always worring about it too. I freak out every time I feel it come out and see that wet spot in my underwear. However, when I collect some of the discharge on my fingers, it's white and watery like milk. They say that thats normal discharge "leukorhea." It increases the further along you get. My doctor says its from the hormones. I just examine my discharge every time i feel it gush out and if it has a whitish color to it, I know its normal.

  • This same thing happend to my cousin. She had no idea that her amniotic fluid had almost all leaked out.  Her Dr said that is common to mistake it for discharge but they noticed it because the baby was in distress and she had high BP. She had an emergency c/s but the baby was also breech so she would probably need one anyway

  • With my first I didn't know my water had totally broke.  I thought I was just leaking fluid.  Once I got to the hospital they told me it had ruptured. I was only 35 weeks and almost was going to just go to bed and think nothing of it.

If you are concerned, examine the discharge.  Sounds gross but it will help not freak you out.  Amniotic fluid is clear (well most of the time).  The discharge most likely is at least a little milky.  With my second I felt it break and it was a huge gush so there was no mistaking it that time.
