Amalia...nickname Mia

I really love the name Mia if its a girl but since we have a short and simple last name I would like Mia to be a nickname to a longer name. Do you think the name Amalia (ah-meh-lee-ah) would work with the nickname Mia or would this be super confusing?

    I know am AmElia that goes by Mia... I like Mia though.  T

     

    amalia sounds like a bacteria to me...

    No, amalia doesn't work for mia and i don't like it.

    are you sure mia doesn't work with your last name?  even though mia is short it does have two syllables, so it may still work with your last name.

    Amalia and Amelia aren't pronounced the same. I like Amelia, but not Amalia. I like Mia. It's 2 syllables so it could work with a short last name.

    I'm not 100% that it wouldn't work with our last name---I'm not going to put a whole lot more thought into it until we know the gender (if it ends up being a boy this is all for nothing!)

    I'd pronounce Amalia as: A MAH lia, not A MEH lia as you said....?

    I like Amelia, and I love Mia alone as well!

    Oops! Yes, you are right when I say it I say it A MAH lia.

    But Mia on its own has a good chance winning out here too if I can convince myself that with our last name it doesn't sound too simple.

    I don't like Amalia, but like Amelia a lot. Mia is cute, though, and I think it could work with a short last name, as long as it doesn't ryhme or something, ie. Mia Pia.

    The only people I have known (2 of them, outside the US) with the name Amalia pronounced it A-MAH-lia.  That's how I think most people will read it, too.  It looks like you're not planning to pronounce it that way, so that's something to keep in mind. 

    Amalia to Mia seems like a bit of a stretch to me -- the more logical nn seems like it would be Lia...

    Amalia is a gorgeous name, though :)

     

    ETA that I see you are planning to pronounce it A-MAH-lia.

    DD's name is Amalia and we prounounce it Ah-mah-lya, the way it is pronounced in Spanish and Portuguese. The pronunciation you have written above looks more like Amelia.

    We don't use any nicknames for her, it doesn't seem necessary. Also, since the "mia" sound isn't actually part of the name, it seems like a weird, unrelated nickname to use.

    Amalia is a popular name in my family as we have a lot of Scandinavians. ?It lends itself better to Amy or Molly as nicknames (based on the sound) than Mia. ?
