Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When can baby have lobster?

We are having a family "lobsterfest" this weekend.  I know someone is going to ask me if I'm going to give DD a taste.  I want to have a good answer.  Is it too early to let her try it?

Re: When can baby have lobster?

  • I dont see why a little bit would hurt. We gave DD shrimp. lobster around that age and she still loves it.

  • We going home to Cape Cod next week, so I just asked the pedi about this for the same reasons as you.

I was told absolutely no earlier than a year, preferably waiting until age 3. She said seafood allergies are usually more severe than other foods and they won't grow out of them.

    More lobster for me! ;)

  • I would say yes it is too early but I am one of those perinoid mothers. I don't eat seafood so this may be a stupid question but is that shell fish? Isn't that something that has really high allergies for LO's?

  • No!!!!  I haven't even given any to DS yet and he's almost 18 months!  Shellfish allergies are some of the worst allergies.  I'm waiting quite awhile longer.

ETA:  I mean, Yes!!!!!  As in, yes, it's too early!!!!!!

  • Check with your pedi.  Mine recommends waiting until they are 2 b/c seafood allergies can be so severe.

  • I just asked our pedi about this at our 9 month appt since e are huge seafood/sushi eaters and wanted some guidelines.  She said we could introduce fish (cooked) now but no shellfish until at least a year and preferably longer.
