3rd Trimester

Now I'm scared--preeclampsia?

I've had such a good pregnancy.  Now, suddenly, the doctor tells me that I am leaking protein in my urine and that I needed to be tested for preeclampsia.  I googled it, and now I am scared!  I know a few of you on this board have this complication--is it really as terrifying as google makes it sound?  I'm trying to stay calm until the test results come back, but it's not happening.

  • You may want to ask on the high risk board too!  There are a lot of girls over there that will have a wealth of info for you.

  • There are other signs of Pre-E such as high blood pressure.  Usually when you have protein in your urine and high blood pressure, that is a pretty good indication you have it.  If your blood pressure is fine, no need to worry!  How far along are you?  A friend of mine had it and she was induced at 37 weeks which ended up in a c-section, but she had a healthy baby boy.
  • I had protein in my urine and elevated BP, and was tested for pre-e. I passed with flying colors. Just because your doctor is being cautious doesn't mean you actually have pre-e!

You'll be fine - pre-e can be scary but can also be effectively managed.

  • I have protien in my urine almost everytime I am at the dr's. As long as my blood presure remains steady adn in the normal range and I don't experieince too much added swelling my dr isn't too concerned. she just keeps an eye on it and send the urine out for testing. Protien in the urine is only one of the signs of pre-e. My dr said that if any of the other signs showed up esp. higher bp then i would be put on bed rest to see if we could lower the blood presure. if it gets out of control there is a chance of being induced early or having a c-section before edd to ensure mom and baby are safe.

wait for the test results and try to stay calm and relaxed.

  • Right now, I'm going through the same testing. My blood pressure has been slightly elevated and I have had mild swelling. I'm just trying to take it all in stride. Stressing will just make things worse. Like the PPs said, stay calm and relax. There's nothing you can do to change it if you have it.

My OB plans on inducing between 38 and 39 weeks if I have it, which may turn out to be a bit of a blessing because my asthma is increasing in severity.

  • My sister had preeclampsia. But the concern for hers was brought on by high blood pressure. She just ended up having to have a c-section. Her and the baby were just fine.
  • Don't be scared. Your doctor is being cautious. I've been leaking proten and my bp has fluctuated, but all my labs have come back normal. So really i'm on bed rest and we're trying to get to 37 weeks when we will probably be induced.

  • My doctor did the same thing because of the excess swelling in my feet.  My B/P is normal and i do not push over any protein in my urine.  But to say the least I go for weekly NST and have to stay off my feet.  It scared me too at first but since I have been taking it easy the excess swelling has gone down ALOT! now i can fit into shoes again when i do venture out!
