my ds is 12 weeks and he's had 2 bowel surgeries. the first one was to remove part of his bowel that had died and the other was last week b/c part of his bowel twisted. i just called the nicu to see how he was doing and they said that they had to stop his feeds b/c he wasn't putting out too much in his ostomy. they are going to have the surgical team come to look at him sometime today. so now i'm nervous about what's to come. hopefully it's nothing, but i'm just nervous. has anyone else been through anythign similar? also, at what point did they reconnect your LO bowel? thanks
Re: Anyone have LO with bowel issues???
Both of my children have Hirschsprung's My 1st had 4 surgeries and it took 4 years to reverse the colostomy, but this was back in the 90's, the baby had a primary pull through at 4 wks old and should not need any further surgeries.
Bowel issues can vary so much from one child to the next. I am sorry that your LO is going through this. I hope they correct all the issues soon.
Good luck, I am soory I am not able to help much.

I am sorry to hear that your LO is having trouble. How long ago was his resection? What caused it, if you know? We did not. Was he eating and tolerating feeds before?
My ds is 4 months and just had his bowel reattachment last Thursday. He had a major bowel resection (75 cm) after going into respiratory arrest and then another resection and an ostomy two days later. That was 9 weeks ago. They told us the magic widow for reattachent is about 8 weeks poet-resection, if they are up for the sugery. Since we were still in the hospital they just went ahead and did it. He pooped with in 3 days of the surgery and is already back on formula. They are also already increasing his feeds daily and lowering his TPN. We've had some major ups and downs, but ds has made it this far and so can yours.
I know exactly how you feel calling and getting told that the team needs to come reassess whats going on. It will take the breath right out of you. Let us know.

he had his first resection day 4 of life. he did great afterwards and was about to come home when last week he stopped putting out stool into his ostomy bad, so they figured he had some kind of blockage. it turned out that his bowel had twisted, so they did another surgery last wednesday and took out about 8 cm, not much. he's been doing well up until today. well, not perfect, he did develop an absess and has been getting antibiotics to treat that, but he has been putting out stool until today. so when i called and heard that he was putting anything out really i was suprised. i'm just hoping his colon hasn't twisted again and hoping he won't have to have another surgery. i'm optimistic and staying positive, but i'm just frustrated and just want him to get better.
Yes, my son also has bowel issues. He, like an earlier poster's sons, was born with Hirshsprung Disease. He had an ostomy at 2 days old, and then a portion of his colon removed and reattached to his anus at 7 weeks old (pull-thru). I've talked with lots of moms who have kids with Hirschsprung and they've had pull-thrus done on newborns to 4-year-olds, just depends on each child's situation.
Good luck and hang in there!
