XP: Swelling questions

When do you cross the line from "normal pg swelling" and "not normal, something is wrong swelling?"

My swelling has at least doubled (maybe even tripled) this week.  Was in the hospital Mon-Wed for pre-term labor.  Got steroids and did get my Procardia dose increased from 10mg to 20mg every 4 hours.  But, I'm swollen now from my hips all the way down to my toes.  I can barely walk right now (not that I'm walking much anyway-on bed rest).  I cannot move my feet, only can shuffle.  I kept showing my swelling to my docs and nurses in the hospital this week, but they didn't seem to think much about it.  I have another appt tomorrow morning.  Any thoughts?

Did have some pre-eclampsia concerns a few weeks ago, but only having trace amts of protein in urine.  Bp is elevated for me (normally 100/60) and is now around 125/85 (keep in mind that I'm on A LOT of bp med with the Procardia 20mg).  Some vision disturbances (black spots) too...

  • Wow lady, you have had a crazy week. I don't know the answer, but I was having my NST on Wed and some girl asked the same thing and then sent her to L&D. I can't believe you are 32 weeks!!!!

  • I'd say to call your OB tonight but since you have an appointment tomorrow, you should bring it up again.  A close friend of mine had pre-e.  She gained 18 pounds in 1 week purely due to swelling, and her OB did nothing, said it was normal. She finally went to the ER and they diagnosed pre-e right away and gave her an emergency c-section.  Everything turned out well, she and baby did great, so I don't want to worry you, and it may be nothing.  But I say bring it up again, you can never be too careful.  Good luck!
  • Thanks for both of your responses.  I really appreciate it.

I'm getting kinda freaked out this morning.  I don't know the culprit, but I am going to make them dig deeper this morning (appt at 9:45am).  I got a lot of IV fluids on my admission this week, but the swelling has not been relieved, so I'm kinda ruling that out.  I think it could maybe be the Procardia.  I just weighed myself this morning though and I've gained 10 lbs in less than a week.  I was on track with a normal twin weight gain pregnancy of around 40 lbs until this morning.  Kinda freaked out now.  I think it's pre-eclampsia and they aren't diagnosing it because my bp is within normal limits.  Of course it is!  I'm on a big dose of Procardia which has it's primary purpose to reduce your bp.  I'm so frustrated with my OB office this week.
