3rd Trimester

So whoever said that an internal was the same discomfort level as a pap smear lied horribly.

Unless of course your pap smears hurt like crap.

But 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. I know it doesn't really mean much. Doctor said, "well, I don't think you'll go into labor tonight, but it could be the next few days, or it could be the next few weeks".

Also told me that she wouldn't let me go past my due date because of the size of the kid (too small not too big! don't get a lot of those around here...).

  • Mine hurt like a biitch, too.  Like, I was gripping the table and couldn't breathe while she did it.  We seem to be the minority here, though.

  • Totally agree...it does seriously hurt!

  • Mine really didn't hurt.  I wonder if it has to do with the doctor or the position of the cervix?

  • Ive yet to have an internal exam...why do they hurt so badly?  Now I'm a little nervous to have one
  • Mine didn't hurt at all. I just felt pressure. I guess everyone is different.
  • I think that person was 3-4 cm's .. my first couple exams hurt. once I past 2 cm they quit hurting. she stripped my membranes on tuesday and I remember when they did that with DD, this  time it didn't hurt much at all.
  • I'm sorry. I haven't had one yet so I can't say.

Why is the baby being too small an issue? No judgment, just wondering ( know there has been a lot of judgment around here today so I didn't want to be misunderstood).

They hurt because they have to get their hand up close enough to your cervix to touch it intimately. She said that they'd get better the further dilated I become because it'd be easier for her to reach and it wouldn't feel like she "was going for my tonsils".

  • My first hurt like a mother so I don't know about that pap thing.

  • No _shit.

I was in a ton of pain. DH decided to go to that appointment with me and said he didn't breathe the entire time because of my reaction - lol. Good thing it didn't last very long. Nothing like the feeling of your doctor being elbow deep... Indifferent

The good news is that the 2nd one wasn't nearly as painful as the first for me.

Could be a sign that the kid isn't growing enough inside the uterus and would thrive better on the outside.

  • My first and second weren't too bad.. not painful but worse than a pap for sure, and worse when you're dilated. Maybe it depends on the doctor? The actual internal (checking how much you're dilated/effaced) is nothing compared to getting your membranes stripped, though!! Tongue Tied OUCH.

  • I had 3 within about 18 hours in the hospital last week.  They freaking HURT!!  I was gripping the bedsheets.

Thanks. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Hopefully your LO is just a bit on the small side.

  • It hurt me!!! I am not dialated!!! Maybe that did have something to do with it. I have been having contractions on and off since Tuesday which was the date of my internal!!!
  • I've had two internals so far and neither of them hurt at all. I could feel pressure, but there wasn't any pain.

No problemo. I try really hard not to freak out and my doctor has been doing a really good job of calming my fears. She's convinced that we're just having a small, perfectly formed baby.

And don't worry about offending me in the future, it takes a lot for me ;o)

mine hurt like hell too when my OB did it, but it wasn't that bad (uncomfortable, of course) when my L&D nurse did it.

I really think it depends on who does it.

  • Oh lord this is what I don't want to hear. My first internal is next week. Sorry it hurt you. :(
  • They do hurt at least for me but I think it also depends on the doctor because I see 4 different docs in my practice and onl one doesnt hurt so when they do them now I tell them take it nice and slow or dont do it.
  • I guess it also depends on the dr or nurse who performs the internal. With my previous OB it wasn't so bad at all, it was just like a normal pap, but when I was in labor I was checked a million times and some of them were bad and some were not. The very first nurse who checked me was a brute! Now, this time around I had a pap at 10 weeks and it hurt like hell, and it was another Dr. It don't worry at all, I am just too curious to know what's going on down there.

  • I had my first one last week and it hurt a lot more then I expected. I also had a lot of bleeding and cramping afterwards. I wasn't dialated at all so hopefully that was why. I have another one tomorrow, hopefully I'm dialated so it won't hurt as bad.
  • The ones I had at 36 and 38 weeks didn't hurt at all.  The others were uncomfortable, and the one on Tuesday was the worst.

  • Agreed -- I nearly came off the table when I had mine in L&D a few weeks ago.  Very similar to the cervical manipulation I experienced during the whole IF process...PAINful.

  • Yeah, that's exactly what I thought after mine too. I tend to err toward the idea that the doctor was over-zealous (because paps never hurt me) but I'm still terribly leery of getting another internal before I go into labor regardless of who does it. I will, however, be requesting a different doctor for my 40 week appt, which is the earliest I will even consider letting them do another internal, just in case.?

I was 1 cm, 50% at mine too. I'm sure that's coincidence, but odd anyway (to me at least.)?

mine either...didn't hurt before i started dilating, and yesterday at over 3cm, didn't hurt either. might be one of those things that's just different for everyone.

  • I had never heard that it was the same level as a pap but that is COMPLETE b.s.!!! DH says it looks like my dr is shoving her arm up there so far her hand is going come out my mouth...

Not the best mental picture he could've given...?

  • Aw, sorry!!  I thought a pap was WORSE than an internal.  Maybe b/c my OB is super tiny?  Haha, I don't know...the internal is also WAY quicker so I think that helps

  • My OB with my other two kids did them all the time and they weren't too uncomfortable and didn't hurt... probably depends on doc.
  • ya amen, I just kept saying 'oww oww oww!' and backing up the table haha
  • Mine have never hurt...sorry yours do though =/

  • Ooh, mine hurt and I had some light bleeding/discharge afterwards too....he had to tell me to relax!!  But I am always really uncomfortable doing any kind of internal exam, I think that paps hurt a little too!  I think for me it's just the idea that something is up that that shouldn't be, poking and prodding around....ugh!!
  • I've had one internal, and it hurt like a mother. Paps always hurt for me too... I seem to be very tight, or the OB's hands are big.... I did notice some cramping after the internal, but it went away. They've asked at my last two weekly appointments if I want to be checked and I'm like "um, yeah, not unless she absolutely NEEDS to..." No thanks.
  • Well damn my doctor said he is giving me one at my next appointment (July 29th).... *nervous laugh*
