Unless of course your pap smears hurt like crap.
But 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. I know it doesn't really mean much. Doctor said, "well, I don't think you'll go into labor tonight, but it could be the next few days, or it could be the next few weeks".
Also told me that she wouldn't let me go past my due date because of the size of the kid (too small not too big! don't get a lot of those around here...).
Re: So whoever said that an internal was the same discomfort level as a pap smear lied horribly.
"You're gonna miss this You're gonna want this back You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast..."
I'm sorry. I haven't had one yet so I can't say.
Why is the baby being too small an issue? No judgment, just wondering ( know there has been a lot of judgment around here today so I didn't want to be misunderstood).
They hurt because they have to get their hand up close enough to your cervix to touch it intimately. She said that they'd get better the further dilated I become because it'd be easier for her to reach and it wouldn't feel like she "was going for my tonsils".
No _shit.
I was in a ton of pain. DH decided to go to that appointment with me and said he didn't breathe the entire time because of my reaction - lol. Good thing it didn't last very long. Nothing like the feeling of your doctor being elbow deep...
The good news is that the 2nd one wasn't nearly as painful as the first for me.
Could be a sign that the kid isn't growing enough inside the uterus and would thrive better on the outside.
Thanks. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. Hopefully your LO is just a bit on the small side.
No problemo. I try really hard not to freak out and my doctor has been doing a really good job of calming my fears. She's convinced that we're just having a small, perfectly formed baby.
And don't worry about offending me in the future, it takes a lot for me ;o)
mine hurt like hell too when my OB did it, but it wasn't that bad (uncomfortable, of course) when my L&D nurse did it.
I really think it depends on who does it.
I guess it also depends on the dr or nurse who performs the internal. With my previous OB it wasn't so bad at all, it was just like a normal pap, but when I was in labor I was checked a million times and some of them were bad and some were not. The very first nurse who checked me was a brute! Now, this time around I had a pap at 10 weeks and it hurt like hell, and it was another Dr. It don't worry at all, I am just too curious to know what's going on down there.
The ones I had at 36 and 38 weeks didn't hurt at all. The others were uncomfortable, and the one on Tuesday was the worst.
Agreed -- I nearly came off the table when I had mine in L&D a few weeks ago. Very similar to the cervical manipulation I experienced during the whole IF process...PAINful.
Yeah, that's exactly what I thought after mine too. I tend to err toward the idea that the doctor was over-zealous (because paps never hurt me) but I'm still terribly leery of getting another internal before I go into labor regardless of who does it. I will, however, be requesting a different doctor for my 40 week appt, which is the earliest I will even consider letting them do another internal, just in case.?
I was 1 cm, 50% at mine too. I'm sure that's coincidence, but odd anyway (to me at least.)?

I can't go back to yesterday - because I was a different person then. ~ Alice
mine either...didn't hurt before i started dilating, and yesterday at over 3cm, didn't hurt either. might be one of those things that's just different for everyone.
I had never heard that it was the same level as a pap but that is COMPLETE b.s.!!! DH says it looks like my dr is shoving her arm up there so far her hand is going come out my mouth...
Not the best mental picture he could've given...?
Mine have never hurt...sorry yours do though =/
