Re: A poll about BFPs and job prospects

  • I think it depends on the job. If you are going to be doing something you should be more careful doing during pregnancy (painting, heavy lifting, taking x-rays...) I would let my boss know right away. If not, I wouldn't say anything until later.

  • that's a hard one.  i voted for stay where you are, but really it was too hard to decide.   a lot to consider.

    1.  what about health ins, are you on DH's plan?

    2.  maybe you can leave old job when you have a baby and start another job when you are ready to go back to work?

    tough one.

  • I found this a little personal because with DS and then my current BFP I found out on my first cycle after I started a new job.  I consider getting a new job my lucky charm!!  I just have my fingers crossed that my betas are good today and this is a real BFP!!
    BFP #1: DS born 11/07 BFP #2: m/c @ 8w 5d d&c
  • I said new job and not tell right away... not that it isn't "for keeps" because it is... but you have to make it past a certain point for the security at a new job (i.e. probation period) and I say leave your old job because if I remember corectly the old job was overly stressfull, otherwise you wouldnt be looking for a new one, and you need as little stress as possible with a BFP!

  • agree w/pp -- depends on job - what'll you be doing. not just heavy lifting - but think about stress too (stress of changing jobs, etc.). sometimes change is exactly what you need - sometimes it is not.

also what benefit is the new job (more moola, happiness, benefits) -- both now, and post baby arrival?

if it all adds up - I say take the job and don't tell til later.

    Good luck (hypothetically!)

  • I am currently looking for a teaching position, and I know that I will not have Mat leave my first year.  I can easily go onto H's insurance, even if it is not as good.  And as for Mat leave, we can save the money for my 6 weeks off and my Aflac money will be able to subsidies the rest.  There is never going to be a perfect time for a baby.  And you can not live your life based on what ifs.  I say take the job, and tell them in 8 weeks.  Unless of course you start showing earlier.  Smile
  • I saw take the new job! We supposedly live in a country where it is okay to have babies & work- tell them when you feel comfortable. You can even wait until you start to show if you want...

  • I was in a similar spot my last BFP.  I got a BFP right around the second round of interviews.  I freaked and asked to pull my application because it was a more stressful job.  I kicked myself every day after...

what is their policy on maternity leave? Most places youneed to be there ayear before getting paid maternity.

  • It's none of their business if you are pregnant or not!  I would not tell my work till I absolutely had to, regardless of whether it was a new job or not.  You might want to see what you can find out about their maternity leave benefits before you accept though, if they have a website or another sneaky way to do it...

  • It's not legal for them to hold your pregnancy against you. I knew a lady who got the counseling job in my school district a month before she was due.
  • Hey Jen!  I'm late on replying to this post, sorry!  I've been at my current job for almost a year and a half, but when I got my BFP, I had only been working here for like 2 weeks.  I was nervous about maternity leave and all that stuff, but found out every employee is eligible for short term disability (that's what our maternity leave falls under) as soon as they become an employee.  I still didn't tell anyone that I was pregnant until 17 weeks, I thought I was in the clear and it was safe to tell co-workers.  I had my m/c a week after I told them.  But they were very nice about giving me time off while I was in the hospital, then at home recovering from the d&e.  They didn't even take vacation/sick days from me!

So, I wouldn't let your pregnancy get in the way of accepting a new job, but I wouldn't tell them right away.  Wait until the 2nd trimester.  In the meantime, look into their benefits, maternity leave, etc.

    Good luck with your decision!
