Just a warning - I learned after reading an article and then actually matching the nutrition facts, but just because a box is labled "Organic" does not mean it's healthier than their "normal" counter part.
Most crackers and baby treats labeled as such have more sugar and salt in them.
Just a little PSA.
Re: Organic does not = Better
Organic = no pesiticides/fertilizers in the ingredients, not lower fat/calories/sugar, right? Also, just because something is labeled organic, doesn't mean every ingredient is organic... just a certain percentage.
ETA: the organic puffs from Happy Baby have WAY less sugar than the Gerber ones...
Yep.
Admittedly, I don't know a lot about what the term "organic" actually means, but I was looking for canned veggies (there are some days that I really just need the shortcut), but there's so much salt in them! There was an organic brand of canned carrots and it had just as much salt. I was bummed. I need healthy and convenient, dammit.
My silly Lily is almost 4.
Nutritionally speaking of course there is no difference. Organic refers to how it is grown and processed not the actual nutrient content.
"Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, or sewage sludge, and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives."
I feed probably 50% organic (fruits, vegetables, and dairy) primarily to avoid DDs exposure to pesticides.
Yep. If something is loaded with all natural, pesticide free sugarcane, raw sugar...its still loaded with sugar.
All natural saturated fat is still saturated fat, etc....
I don't know why people would ever think organic = health food.
They aren't "germs" in regular food. They are pesticides. Different than letting your baby play in the dirt.
Also, we weren't raised on organics, but factory farming wasn't as big as it is now, and some of the effects of being raised on processed foods we may NOT know until we're 50 and fighting some odd new form of cancer. Not saying that's going to happen, but assuming we're all okay and should continue to feed our children pesticides might not be the healthiest solution.
Not to say eating all organic is going to keep you from getting sick, but we try to feed ourselves as much organic as we can at our house.
Organic does not equal sick all of the time. DD has only ever had organic food and she's never had a cold or a fever. (She's never had any shots/immunizations either and she's still cold and fever free.)
This exactly. I read labels for nutrition info, but I feed DS organic to avoid pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, etc.
What does organic have to do with germs?
I'm not sure why so many people think organic = more nutritious. It has to do with how the food was farmed, that's it. A carrot is still a carrot.
I agree with pp - and just because "you turned out fine" doesn't mean that other people should want to feed their children more pesticides, etc. then they have to.
As far as your title, I would argue that Organic DOES = Better
Of course it isn't healthier, it is still the same food. It IS better though because you aren't feeding your child food that has been covered in pesticides or injected with hormones.
I giggle when I see things like Organic Chocolate, cause I know that people will automatically think it is better for you. LOL, not so much.
I try to feed DS all organic, but of course fall short cause some organic stuff is just too expensive or hard to find in my area.
I refuse to buy organic milk because it is ultra-pasteurized. You can find regular milk that is simply pasteurized, yet does not have antibiotics or hormones in it. The more the milk is pasteurized the harder it is for your body to digest.
