Toddlers: 24 Months+

What kind of grandparents are your parents?

My mom is like Super Grandma.  We are almost 4 hours away from her but yet she/we make an effort to get together at least two weekends a month.  This month, it's been every single weekend!

I can't imagine what it must be like to not have your parents be completely in love with DC.

Re: What kind of grandparents are your parents?

  • My parents are totally amazing.  They watch our kids 2 days a week as I work PT & I love that my kids are just as comfortable at their house as at ours. My DH has always commented that no matter how much they see the kids, they are *always* excited to see them. My MIL/FIL are great w/them, but they live across the country.

I have a friend whose MIL/FIL are awful.  They can hardly bother to change their golf schedule to make time for their grandkids.  Their DD left a special baby over there on Father's Day & they have yet to even assist my friend in seeing how they could meet up to get it- they live less than an hour away. She's not expecting them to come to her, but maybe meet halfway or something since they are retired & she & her DH work. Niiiiceee.....

  • My mom lives 2,000 miles away. She sends stuff constantly, requests pictures daily and tries to be involved as she can. She visits once a year and I go there once a year. She could afford to visit more if she sent less presents, but she won't listen! My stepdad probably cares but never is that involved. But I'm not his kid and it's not his "real" grandchild, so I think that makes a difference. I give my mom an A.

MIL calls every 3 mos, sends very age-inappropriate gifts and visits once a year. She's 600 miles away. She just doesn't seem to care that much. I give her a C-.

  • Our parents are wonderful. My daycare was closed this week and they stepped right up to take turns watching Jacob. They absolutely adore him. I love that we live close to all of them too.
  • both my husband and my parents live in New England. They both send stuff ALL the time and visit a couple of times a year. They also call all the time too. Eventually, my IL's will be retiring to FL and living a few miles from us which altho they can be annoying at times, they will be our future daycare lol. My parents will also retire to FL, but they will retire a couple of hrs from where I live bc my grandmother lives in that area, and they will need to eventually help my aunt out with her as she gets older. So, I am excited to have everyone much closer eventually!

ILs are awesome and come out frequently to be with DD.  MIL (with permission of course) totally will take over -- changing diapers, bathing, brushing teeth, dressing her, playing, feeding, you name it.  FIL likes to try and read to her and plays a bit with her but he is more mellow than my very energetic MIL.

My parents are a bit different.  My dad is okay but tends to try and parent too much, to the point that my sister and SIL have repeatedly told him to back off (I haven't had as much of an issue given DD's age at the last visit (not even 18 mos)).  He just seems uncertain of his role as a GP even though his oldest GC is 13 (step) and oldest biological is 6.  My mom is great and loves to cuddle, read and play with DD but she is not as great about the bathing and generally keeping up with DD simply because she is physically not as able as MIL (bad knees and very overweight).

  • fabulous!  my mom and dad see Carson pretty much every weekend and play with him, buy him clothes all the time and will pick him up from daycare whenever i need them to.  they live 10 minutes from me and dh.

my mil/fil live 20 minutes away and watch Carson one day a week voluntarily and absolutely adore him.  my sil watches him one day per week and mil/fil will go over that day to visit and see him also.

needless to say he is loved.

  • My family is awesome!  My dad and step-mom never turn down an opportunity to see DD.  We live about 30 minutes from each other so it's relatively easy for us to get together for breakfast or dinner or something.  My dad calls me almost every day to see what DD is up to and hear her crazy stories.  They don't go overboard with gifts everyday but they definitely spoil her.  It's great having them so close b/c they will always watch DD overnight if DH and I need a break.  She is the only grandchild on my side so she gets a ton of extra attention

The IL's live about an hour away.  MIL hasn't seen DD since Easter but that's partly because she broke her arm and had to have surgery right before she was supposed to come up.  FIL makes random trips up to our house just to see DD.  The IL's are very frugal with their money so they don't buy DD much but it really doesn't matter.  They love her and I know that and I think she knows that.  DH is actually going to their house tomorrow to help FIL with something so DD will go and spend the whole day up there with MIL.

With the ILs I feel like they have to compensate for the fact that SIL has 3 kids and they all live in TX.  When I talk to MIL I get a little annoyed b/c she's always talking about SILs kids and doesn't seem to care about what is going on with DD.  But, apparently it's the same way when SIL talks to MIL...MIL always talks about DD.

  • MIL loves the kids and does a lot for them. She can't babysit for health reasons, but does pay for 2 days of daycare a week. FIL has not sent a card or gift to either child ever and is not a grandfatherly person. My mom and dad live 1200 miles away, but talk to DD on the phone and will send things to the kids.
  • so amazing i can't describe it. my parents live about 20 mins away and would take them any day of the week. i dont go to appts with my kids usually, i get "days off", we do date nights, etc bc they just love to have them over at their house. they have everything (and more of somethings! lol) than i have here so the girls are completely comfortable. they teach them things, have special things they do with them (that if i do, aidan says "no, thats for nana/papa!!" the girls just love them so much.... i am very lucky.
  • My parents are incredible. My mom watches DS every day. Noah really adores my dad, it's really sweet. My mom is great with him and all of her grandkids for that matter (she has 5).

Now my ILs they are another story. DHs parents are divorced. We saw FIL for Fathers Day. We haven't seen him since April, he didn't even pay any attention to DS. It really bothered me, he was too busy watching golf on TV. MIL lives about 45 minutes away and hasn't seen DS since March. She never calls...makes no effort. The difference between my parents and my ILs are like night and day.

That sounds exactly like my mom! (my dad passed away 14 years ago)

Her house is full of toys for Emma and every time we go visit, she gets her something new!  She's got ride on toys and a sand/water table there too.  It's crazy because we never have to bring anything except Emma when we go visit.
