Babies: 9 - 12 Months

weaning 9/10 month old - formula or milk?

I'm reaching the end of BFing I think. ?DD doesn't like taking a bottle anymore, nurses fine, but is in daycare. ?So she eats solids/table food like a champ, drinks water/juice out of a sippy pretty well, nurses in the morning before daycare and once or twice in the evening before bed.

She's had no problems with cheese and yogurt or any other food.

My supply is dwindling and I'm soooo sick of pumping that I'm trying to figure out what to do.

Would you suggest starting her on formula at daycare (it's free) and BF as long as I can at home or slowly start introducing 2% mixed in with BM at daycare until the very small freezer stash is gone and nurse at home? ?I need to have her weaned by mid-August so I can go back to work. ?She'll be 1 yr on Sept 5th. ?Any other suggestions?

Re: weaning 9/10 month old - formula or milk?

  • I started formula last week with DD after EBFing and pumping since birth and she has done well with it.  I only nurse her at bedtime and in the mornings now and I plan to continue that as long as I have milk and she still wants to nurse.  But, she gets formula during the day while I work and so far so good.

I think babies need the nutrients from formula and/or BM til at least one.

  • If it were me I wouldnt intro cows milk yet. I would use up your stash and then move to formula for the last few months if you cant get any bm pumping, it doesnt seem like she would need that much formula at daycare since she eats solids well. I would continue to nurse at night too. GLCan you try pumping after feeding her in the morning, I know I have a huge supply in the am, JMO

  • I'd go with the (FREE!!!) formula. She still needs that nutrition and 2% will not supply her with what's necessary.

  • DS gets mostly formula (he drinks 24-30 oz. a day), but still wants to nurse in the AM, when we get home from daycare and before bed. I know I don't produce a lot, I haven't pumped at work in months, so the BFing is just comfort for him at this point (I'm not completely dry so he is getting a little bit. So, it is possible to do both if you want.

Ditto this.  When you do transition to milk, I believe you're supposed to use whole milk.

  • I would finish all the frozen milk first. Then, I would go to whole milk. I would do formula if he shows any issues with the whole milk but otherwise that should work fine.

  • If it were me, I'd continue with pumping since you are so close to the one year mark. After that your LO can have whole milk at DC, and BF at home.
