How did you learn?  Take a class?  Read a book?  It just doesn't seem to be very intuitive.  Usually I just go to picasa and pick "I'm feeling lucky" and then adjust it if it doesn't seem right.  Luckily since I use my dad's canon 5D my pics don't need much adjustment unless it's weird lighting, but I'd still like to know how to use it.

Re: photoshop users

  • I was on photography boards where I could ask questions, but most of it just came from tooling around on it.  Also, you tube has some good instructional videos.

  • I read tons and tons and tons of online tutorials and just played around, figuring out what the different tools could do. I thought about checking out a book at the library but found that photography blogs (found just by searching Google) provide amazing and free information, much of the time.

I shoot in RAW mode so that I can use the RAW editor on Photoshop, which saves me a million steps later. I recommend trying that. It seems overwhelming at first and the files are, ummm, GIANT but I love that quality.

Using actions is helpful, too. I don't always run actions but they're handy when you want to give a photo a certain effect or different look. Plus, the black and white in action sets blow any b&w I can create out of the water. Smile

  • Yeah, I shoot in RAW, too.  It is overwhelming at first, but you can pretty much control everything within a photo when it comes to post processing.  If your lighting is off, you can fix that.  If your white balance is off, you can fix that.  etc, etc.  If your coloring is off, you can fix that. There's just so much you can do with RAW images.

Have you tried Coffee shops Vanilla bw action.  I think that's what it's called.  I love it so much more than most bw actions becuase it doesn't blow out the whites.

I love it with every ounce of my being.

    For real.

  • I'm still learning...I suck at it! (self-taught)
