3rd Trimester

Doctor recommended a c/s

At my 35.5 week u/s the baby was measuring 8lbs.  The baby's belly is in the 90% tile.  Last week the doctor we saw (new to the practice) suggested I go into labor and give it a shot before a decision is made but the choice was mine.  Today the doctor I saw (the "head dude" in the practice) walked in and read over my chart, looked at me, and said, "So I take it we are scheduling a c?"  DH and I gave each other a look at then looked at him and told him what we were told last week.  The doctor basically told us that he knows where things will end up and with someone of my frame he doesn't think I should have a 9lber.  He wants me to have another u/s next week to get a better idea of the weight.

On the way out the door the doctor, DH, and I were having a little chat.  The doctor started staring at DH's head and suddenly asked, "Do you have a tough time buying baseball hats?"  DH and I started laughing.  DH mentioned that he does indeed had a big head and that he was all head at birth.  To which the doctor responded, "Then we are making the right decision".

I am not upset since my plan always has been to do what is in the best interest of me and the baby and he feels that this is the way to go.  If I go into labor before the scheduled c/s then I will either have the c/s as an emergency or give the labor a shot depending on how dilated I am (but he thinks I'll end up with a c/s).  I've been having non-painful contractions every 3-5 minutes for a few weeks but nothing has happened.  So it is just a matter of time.....

Re: Doctor recommended a c/s

  • There's no way to know if you would be unable to deliver the baby vaginally until you try and fail.  Also, growth u/s can be off so you won't really know how big baby is until it's here.

  • Sorry, meant to add that if you want the c-section, then go for it, but just realize that the Dr. has no way of knowing if you'll end up needing it or not.

  • At my 34 week appt, our LO was measuring over the 90&ile in everything - head size, abdomen size, femur length - s/he was almost 7 lbs even then. We were told that s/he would probably wind up being a 9 or 10 pounder, which of course freaked me right out. Lucky for us our dr is going to try to let me deliver naturally because that is what I originally wanted to do. She said that if it comes down to needing a c-section we can always do that but at least I will have been able to experience labor.?

That being said I have another growth u/s on Friday morning before our appt so we'll see what the little one has been up to. Who knows...it could have just been a growth spurt and things have evened out. Good luck to you!?

  • This sounds like my discussion on Monday with my doc. But I am a week late, and he waits till now to tell me! I would have had a c-section last Friday if he told me this sooner. Now I am waiting around. Be thankful your doc told you up front and you have time to make a decision!
  • If you want a c-section, then go for it -- and I'm glad the doctor is supportive of you!

But, if the idea of that makes you nervous, don't be afraid to stand up for yourself.  Doctors are quick to suggest invasive procedures (c-section, inductions, etc.) because they can control the risk in a more medicated situation -- and they're trained to minimize risk.  But, it is YOUR choice whether to agree to a scheduled c-section.

Your doctor does not know that you will be unable to give birth vaginally.  It's actually pretty rare for a woman to be unable to give birth vaginally -- usually (even if you're small and the baby is big), your pelvis is designed to birth babies, and you'll be able to do it.  Also, those ultrasounds are frequently wrong -- your baby may very well be smaller than they think.  The only way to know is to try -- if you can't do it, then they'll just do a c-section then.

  • I was offered a c-section for my "big baby" but i told them i would rather try vaginally and fail before i have a major surgery.

    Good luck to you.

  • If that is the route you and your DH want to take, then do it.  But, I agree with the pp's.  My DS was measuring large and my Dr. recommended a CS because he was supposed to be almost 10 lbs. at birth.  I am short with a smaller frame, but my hips sure do spread when I'm PG :)  I agreed to try an induction, but not until 9 w 2 d.

The induction was successful and my DS weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz.  I really would have been upset if I had gone through major surgery for guesstimate that was off by 2 lbs.  I am so happy that I tried for a vaginal birth, but that was the best decision for us.  GL!
