ok..just looked down and

realized my ankles are really swollen........they're gross! They don't hurt and I wouldn't have noticed it except for the fact that I had an itch on my leg so I lifted up my pants.  I know swelling is normal in pregnancy, but at what point do you get concerned? Like if I go home and put them up and it doesn't go away or if they start looking like elephant feet?

  • I've never been PG so I can't say, but I do know that my friend's DH calls them "cankles" when they are swollen. I get the impression it is really really common for the swelling to look pretty bad.

  • If they don't get better after putting your feet up, you might want to call your doc. FWIW, my swelling only went down if I had my feet higher than my heart - I'd have to lie on the sofa with my feet up on the armrest. And even then, it usually took a good two hours for the swelling to go down.

I was like you - would never have noticed unless I looked. Never felt pain or anything like that. But if it's sudden, say something to your doc.

  • My feet and ankles got pretty swollen more toward the end...My doctor was never concerned but did make me cut out salt. It helped but I wasn't very good at avoiding chips or pizza at 9 months pregnant. I also put my feet up every chance I got (even at work!)

If your hands swell up suddenly (or you have high blood pressure) call your doctor

  • My ankles swelled big time at about 7 1/2mos pg. My dr was not concerned..no high bp or anything. They didn't go down until I had Gracie.
