Vent- I'm going to lose my job :(

So, here's the backstory on this. I was laid off from the company I had worked for since I graduated with my MBA last May in January of this year. Found out I was for sure pregnant 5 days later, and then couldn't find a job until the end of April. It was such a struggle to survive on unemployment and I was SO glad I found something.

Right now, I work for an outsourcing company that does recruiting. Our contract is up in the air, due to end or be renewed at the end of the year. I knew this, but I needed a job and this was the only thing I could find, so I took the chance. I just so happened to be looking at one of the HR people's calendars this morning, and they are implementing a new Recruiting Outsourcing Company TOMORROW. They have been telling us since I got here that they didn't know anything and hadn't made a decision. The implementation team for this new company comes in tomorrow--- sounds pretty finite to me!

So, needless to say I am freaking out. I was just FINALLY getting caught up on my bills, and now I am going to be without a job when this baby gets here. I just know it. I am so scared.

Is anyone else going through something similar? Any advice you can give me? I don't know what to do. I need to have a job. This is just too much to take right now...

  • Sorry you are going through this. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that things work out okay. GL!

  • Is there someone in the HR department you can talk to?

I would honestly talk with SO/DH tonight and let them know what is going on at work. I would definitely try to talk to someone in HR tomorrow (after you have had time to think) and just say you have heard recurring "rumors" about this out sourcing company.

I would also go in to this meeting with HR and point out a few things-what you have done for the company, what you plan to do for the company, and how you are going to balance work/baby. Because they are thinking about this. They might not admit it, but you bringing it up instead of sweeping it under the rug will be helpful.

I haven't faced this, but my dad was an divisional HR for many many years for a big box store, and has faced this. he told me lots of stories-but the thing he always said was be upfront about your situation

    Best of luck!!

  • Try not to panic (I know, easier said than done!)  But sometimes, these folks come in to do an evaluation (that takes months) and then they make recommendations.  My friend had that happen and she was fine.

I know of one person in this company that got a job here when she was 7 months pregnant.  So things work out!!

So I am sure you are looking in the interim so keep up the search just to be prepared.  Worst case scenario, temp agencies are pretty good in something happens.  Otherwise, hang in there!!!

  • i know it's not much help, but will you get unemployment checks? on top of unemployment you can maybe babysit or something just until you find something.  i know it sounds easier than it actually is.  i hate to see people loose their jobs now, it almost seems unfair.

maybe you can find something to do from home, which would be great since you're having a baby.. again, easier said than done.

fingers crossed and hope you find something new.

Thank you! I will try what you said. I have my fricken MBA for christ's sake! It's so frustrating to have worked so hard in school and then to be laid off and have the possibility of losing my newest position. I have worked my A$$ off since I have been here, so hopefully that shines through.

  • Ugh :( ?I wish I had some advice. ?I hope everything works out. ?Fingers crossed!?
  • Yes! I am going through almost the same exact thing.

DH will be getting laid off in the fall a couple weeks after Baby arrives. We have no idea what he will do for work, how much he will get paid or what his schedule will be. How am I supposed to plan if I am going back to work full time, if he'll be staying home, if we'll both have to go back to work....who will watch the BABY? We have noooo plan what so ever because we don't know what he will be doing for work in the fall...

Day care is probably full already and probably way out of our price range and our parents still work so it's not like we can have the grandparents of the baby to fall back on....

Doesn't it suck that you work hard for your education and nothing is certain!! Uyy!!!

I'm sure you have worked hard! Just remember what you have done there, and write it down-to show your boss/hr and to have it for your record-

    What have you implemented

What have you changed for the better

What are your greatest assets at your job

I wish you the best of luck. As someone who got laid off in january, I feel the pain! My boss even said I did the most work and was the greatest asset to the company, but since I was the last one there, I was the first one out (small company)..and I was the youngest, and the one who had a spouse who was working and the most financially stable. lovely, huh?

  • i have a similar situation. I work full time every summer and then part time in the spring and fall for school. DH was laid off for part of the winter (hes a union painter) and now he might get laid off again. Nothing is certain! I dont want to stop going to school to work full time but i might have to now! You should just start looking at other options while you have that knowledge that you might get the boot. Companies aren't supposed to discriminate against you being pregnant but you know they probably will.?

I feel your pain!  We found out yesterday that our parent company is eliminating our department and moving the work to Denver, so as of July 24 I will be unemployed.  Unfortunately I don't have any advice, as I'm trying to figure out what to do too...best of luck to you!
