Are helmets more common in twins/trips?

I see so many posts on here about babies having to wear helmets, not sure if I notice it more, or if multiple babies are just more predisposed to it.  TIA.

Re: Are helmets more common in twins/trips?

  • There was just an article about this in one of my parenting magazines.  It did state that it's more common in multiples and boys (though didn't give specific reasons).

Good question though - I'm hoping others have more insight!  DH and I want to take any possible precautions against head issues - though I also have read that position in the womb can have an impact with multiples.

  • We were told by our orthotist that it is more common in multiples.  I know in our case it was due to positioning.  Kaden was head down the entire pregnancy squished by Nolan.  So in our case their wasn't anything we could do to prevent his need for a helmet.

  • I know any preterm baby is more predisposed to cranial shape issues.  This is b/c they spend less time floating in the womb while the head bones are still developing.

  • Xander was at the bottom of the pile and head down the whole time. When he came out his head looked like the shape of a strawberry with big dents in it. He also had a bit of a flat spot for the first 3 mo or so, but managed to not need a helmet.

  • Yes more common in multiples Ben is being watched for needing a helmet.
  • I know that torticollis is more common among multiples because they tend to get squished in the womb.  And I also know that torticollis often leads to plagiocephaly.
