Circumcision

I've heard various things about who does the circumcision: the Rabbi, your OB, the pediatrician, etc., but I want to get it done by a urologist.  I'm not terrified of them chopping it off, but there are some other things that can go wrong, like being too aggressive and ending up with a "hidden penis".  I know some men who have the hidden penis situation and it has definitely affected their self confidence.

Anyone else worry about these things or have experience getting a urologist to do it? TIA.

Re: Circumcision

  • Check and see what your insurance will cover.  Most will only cover the OB in the hospital.  I've heard it can get pricey outside of those parameters.  That said, if you look you may be able to find a mohel that is also a urologist to do it for closer to $500 or so.  Good luck!

  • You'll need to check with your hospital as to whether or not a urologist can be brought in to do the procedure and how to set that up or if you'll need to make an outside appointment with one after discharge. At our hospital only the OB does it, so I'd think I would need to a make an appointment outside the hospital if I wanted someone else to do it.
  • I don't really know anything about this, but I do know that there could be insurance implications if you go this route.  I think if you do it after the fact by a specialist it can be considered elective and not covered by insurance.  Whatever you decide, I'd suggest you find out from your insurance company how it will be covered.
  • We trusted our OB to do DS's....
  • My OB does it the day we will leave the hospital.  She's done a million already, so I'm not worried at all.

  • I know it's nerve-wracking, but also consider how many times your OB has probably performed the procedure.  I am a nurse and one wasn't available to assist my OB (he was in the NICU, though on his way out) so I stood by and helped her.  Not everyone can stomach that, but I felt better making sure it was done right!  I'd also seen it done a number of times before.  Bottom line is, most often everything goes just fine and your OB probably knows that he/she's doing if everything starts out normal with your son.  Good luck.
  • Ooh--I hadn't really thought about the insurance thing.  Well, I've never really been a fan of circumcision just for the heck of it, and this is my only stipulation.  Hopefully DH will continue to agree to having a specialist do it.

Thank you for your input, and please keep it coming if you have more advice!

  • Circumcision is considered surgery so whoever you choose has to have a surgical license.  Obviously OB's do (c-sections), not all pediatricians do, I am not sure about urologists.

  • Definitely check with your hospital and insurance.  Our hospital's policy is to give parents the choice of either: OB, Pediatrician, or Pediatric Urologist.  Assuming our insurance will cover it, I am going to opt for the urologist also, as we have friends with a 6 month old, and his kept growing back together and having to be recut.  Poor guy, he's been cut like 4 times!
  • The problem is that the hidden penis thing seems to run in the family.  I contacted a dr. who specialized in these things and he's the one who suggested a urologist do it, but wouldn't (or couldn't) say whether it was hereditary or not.

OUCH!  Thank you for posting!  I didn't know some hospitals even gave the choice.

  • Also keep in mind that OB's are almost always the first one called upon to do the procedure in the hospital. Because of this, urologists may have MUCH less experience circumsizing newborns, even though urology is their specialty.

This is what I was thinking.  Regardless of the doctor's specialty, I want the one who does 5 a day, not the one who does 5 a year.

  • The rabbi/mohel who will be preforming our baby's circumcision is also a urologist.  Ask around, there might be a mohel who is also a urologist in your area.
  • Our son is a week old and is having his done by the urologist. The pedi in the hospital recommended that to us because the piece of skin they cut is growing a little higher on him than typical and they don't like to let the OBs do anything but the most standard. We're comfortable with this because I'd always prefer to have a specialist do any type of surgery - as my OB said, her primary patients are adult women so it's a little strange that they are expected to do the circumcisions on infant males, but she says the pedis aren't surgeons and OBs are, and that's why it's done that way.

  • All doctors are human.  They all make mistakes... and wouldn't OBs do far more than any other doctor?  Why would going to a urologist make the procedure fail proof?
