Big Ol' PG Lady + Scorching Heat....

Equals a not-so-pleasant encounter in the HEB parking lot today.?

Ya know those "Reserved for parents with BABIES" parking spots? How old do you think a child can be before they are no longer considered a "baby"? 12, perhaps? Old enough to need a training bra, perhaps?

I was circling the parking lot looking for a decent spot, and saw one of these glorious reserved spots open up, made my way to that row just in time for some heifer with a 12 year old girl to pull into it. You better believe I rolled my window down and said "Um, ma'am... these spots are reserved for parents with babies." She said rather rudely "Yeah, and I have my kid with me." To which I responded "Babies. Babies that need to be carried or babies that need their hand to be held... not preteens. I am 30 freaking weeks pregnant with a 1 year old in the car and don't see another open spot remotely close to the door, so thanks for giving parents of young children such consideration..." All she did then was make a little snorty noise and walk off.

In my head, I ran her over. ??

In my head, I smacked her for you too.  Probably before you ran her over.

  • Good for you telling her what the sign means! ?I'm too chicken to do that kind of thing!
  • How rude!! Glad she's showing her daughter the appropriate way to treat others- awesome!

Normally I am too.. and I never would have been able to if my husband was in the car, but I guess I just didn't have the patience for people like that today.?
  • I love you and your pg attitude.

I totally thought this same thing! "I am older and I have more insurance!"

  • I LOVE that you said something!!  People are so inconsiderate!
  • Eh.  It can definitely be annoying, esp. in this heat, but those spots annoy me.  Same as "green car" parking (ie: if their car is so gosh darn good for the environment, then shouldn't they be parking out further and driving further than me?)  I tend to respect them, but I don't like it.  And you better believe my parents park in them if the handicapped spots are full.

They seriously have green car parking?  WTF!?  Now THAT is annoying.  If I were your parents I'd park there too.

If I would have seen a handicapped person get out of the vehicle, I wouldn't have given it another thought. Clearly thats a different situation entirely and I wouldn't mind waddling my happy self a little further to the door for such circumstances. It was seeing a middle-aged, able-bodied woman get out of the car with a preteen girl that irked me.?

And I have never heard of "green car" parking. Thats a little odd.

I love the concept behind the "parents of babies" spots and have been a fan ever since I had the great pleasure of trying to wrangle twin toddlers to the door to get a shopping cart. From that day on I saw the benefit in reserving spots close to the entrance - I was terrified one of the girls would jerk away from me and dart across the parking lot. Now being pregnant AND having a toddler with me - I value them even more. :)

  • Love that you said something. When I was 39 weeks I was at HEB and the Verizon guy tried to give me his schpiel (sp?). I gestured to my belly and said "do I look like I'm in the mood to be approached in the store?" I know the further along I got in pregnancy, the less patience I had.

In my world, pregnancy = handicaped.

People are fvcktards.  I'm glad you said something.  I would probably have also tracked her down in the store and followed her with my cart giving her the stink eye until they left.

alright, you got me back in here.  I was thinking about it more and do agree that the concept of the spots for those with little kids is okay.  Believe me, I fully understand the difficulties of wrangling kids, while pregnant and not.

But I simply do not agree at any time that pregnancy = handicapped and I hate "stork" parking.  Newborn parking?  sure.  Pregnant parking? I have parked in those more often when not pregnant than when I was. Pregnancy is not a disability.  Granted, I had pretty easy pregnancies, but I also had a Labor Day due date and dealt with the heat of the summer in the 3rd trimester.  And I'll try to get the best parking spot in this heat no matter my condition.

  • I was going to my Dr appointment at NAMC last week and they have reserved parking for expectant mothers. ?I was quite irritated to see 2 cars pull in, both with single guys, and take the last 2 spots. ?They had better be glad that I had just parked! ?Today when I went there were no spots and as I parked and then hiked up to my appointment, I was wondering how many of those spots were occupied by single guys. ?I don't think that pg= disability (and I don't think that pg people should park in a handicapped spot), but I do appreciate those spots when they are available.

  • This totally reminds me of HEB 2 days before Thanksgiving the year Hadley was born. Mind you, she was born 10 days after the holiday and I went into labor 2 weeks prior. So I was way PG, having regular contractions, on modified bedrest, and way annoyed that DH wouldn't go to the store for me.

Apparently I stole a woman's spot right up by the door (yes, one of the "Parents w/ Child" spots). In my defense, I had NO CLUE she was waiting for that spot, at least not until she pulled up behind my car and rolled down her window. When I got out she started yelling at me and calling me names for taking her spot. I just stared at her with my mouth open. It's not like she was looking at my backside, she could tell I was about to pop. Later I saw her in the store with her kids, also school aged. I couldn't believe she yelled at me in front of them! Way to teach them something positive, right?

I'm pretty sure that's the only time I even used those spots before H was born. I'm pretty sure a woman in labour and on mod bedrest deserves to park closer to the door.

  • Well, I was always a little irritated by the Mommy parking spots before I got pregnant.  While pregnant, the only times I ever used it was at CVS on 79 in Round Rock - and there was NEVER anyone there.  I mean, I would have always been able to park in that space even if it weren't reserved for expectant mothers - the parking lot was always that empty.

But my favorite thing to do was park there when I was picking up cigarettes for DH...  Big old pregnant lady, taking full advantage of the pregnant lady parking spot... buying a pack of Marlboro Lights.  Klassy.  Sometimes, I'd even pick up a 6pack of Budweiser. Just because.Yes

I do have a sick sense of humor.

(BTW, now I fully appreciate the logic behind the mommy spots, but don't generally use them unless there's just nothing else open)
