I'm worried about J's first tooth. Isn't it supposed to look white??

Could be just a tooth getting ready to come in. DS had blood about a month before his first tooth actually cut.

This is normal, according to WTE The First Year. It's like a blister underneath the skin, and it will go away when it breaks through.

DD just cut her first two teeth last week and never had a blood pocket that big. She did bleed with both of them and you could see it on her gum near where the tooth was coming through, but it was not as large as your sons. If you get other similar responses you might want to take him into the pedi.
