Babies: 9 - 12 Months

if your lo is pulling up on everything,

is he/she always falling and hurting themself? i guess it's just par for the course, and i need to let him pull up to learn...but he does it on everything, all the time, and then ends up hurting himself when he can't figure out how to "fall"...and i cant be there to catch him all the time. guess this is just the way it is in this phase?

Re: if your lo is pulling up on everything,

  • Yes!!! That happened. You can try to teach him to sit down by first showing him how to do it and then putting a toy next to his feet to motivate him to practice it on his own. Beyond that, I think it's just something they have to figure out on their own through trial and error.

  • I supervise DD pretty closely, and catch her.  But occasionally she'll just topple.  But you know what?  It freaks me out, but leaves her unphased.  I think she's going to cry but she just rolls over and gets back to being busy with her toys or pulling up.  I know she must be toppling over a daycare too and I guess she's just tougher than me.

  • DD learned pretty quickly how to fall on her butt and not her face. But, yeah in the beginning she got hurt a lot. It seemed she had bruises on her head every week!

I do think "teaching" them how to fall, or how to get off of furniture backwards is important. Obviously DD doesn't quite get it yet, but repetition helps that!

  • DS is pulling up to his knees and he has stood up in his crib once but I have seen him trying to get his foot underneath him many times. Twice he has tried to lean ona toy for support only to have it fall backwards under his weight. I hate to watch it but I know that he needs to learn to be careful.

  • She seems to be doing OK learning how to fall back - which surprises me.  She can usually fall on her butt or roll to her side.  Usually when she's pulling up, I'm not too far away to grab her (which I've had to do a few times).  I just figure she's going to get some bumps and bruises along the way - it probably hurts us more than it hurts her.
  • DD figured out how to "fall" gracefully and flat on her butt.  Right now, that's how she gets down - but that took time.  The first few "falls" scared the crap out of her!
