Poll~ pierced ears on baby girls

Re: Poll~ pierced ears on baby girls

  • I just had this conversation with my DH this morning!  I'm leaning towards right away but have been paused at undecided for a long time now.

  • We must have gone in to have it done 10 times with my daughter, but she would chicken out (she was 5 when she finally went through with it).  We saved it as a "reward" for good behavior--we really had no issue with them being pierced, but this way we could tell her she earned them.

It was a great set up for the other questions later in life that will get a big fat NO-ie "Can I pierce my tongue?--No! we let you get your ears pierced..."

whaaahahahaha - we are so evil...

  • I am torn. My mom got mine done when I was a baby, and I am grateful that I was totally unaware nor do I remember the pain of it. BUT, my little sister got hers done for her 10th birthday, and it was the sweetest thing to see her so excited and feeling "grown up" going to get it done, and it being her own choice. So, I have no idea.
  • I think it looks really inappropriate on babies.

  • I voted for later, but I also think that it is cute when baby girls have pierced ears.

This. I think it's tacky, to be honest.

  • My mom got tired of dressing me in pink and if she didn't everyone would say what a cute little boy I was. She had my ears pierced at 6 months. I don't see anything wrong with it.

People do stupid things like that anyway though. It's kind of amazing, really.

I'm with kdodge-not a fan of baby girls with pierced ears.

I had mine done at age 11. Maybe I was just a baby, but I totally cried-it hurt a lot.

  • I am just not so much into it at all---I have always thought it is a bit tacky.  But to each their own style!

  • I had mine done when I was a baby and I will do the same with my kid. I don't see anything wrong with it.

    I totally agree. So tacky.

  • I used to work in a jewelry store and had to pierce baby ears.  It is not traumatizing to them but you do have the risk that their ears will grow at different rates or unevenly and then they will have uneven piercings the rest of their lives.  Also, unless they are newborns someone has to physically hold their head really still while they squirm.  It's not very pleasant!  I will most definetly wait and make it an enjoyable mother daughter experience when they are old enough.

  • I agree with kdodge. but dh asked me about this a little while ago - I looked at him like he was nuts, it was totally something I would not expect him to want. I think he's concerned because I hate pink, and thus would not dress a girl in it, and thus he would be concerned if people would ask what the baby is.

because that is such a concern.

    This. 100%.

  • I, personally, will not let my daughter get her ears pierced until she is old enough to clean/take care of them on her own. I remember feeling so responsible when I got mine pierced in 3rd or 4th grade (I can't remember). I think it should be HER decision and not mine to put holes in her little baby ears... I hate when I am in the mall and see a young baby screaming at the top of her lungs as she is getting her ears pierced...whether it hurts her or not.

I can't believe people would take their baby to a jewelry store to have this done on an infant. Don't you have to have it done at a pediatrician when they're babies!?

    This.

I remember it being an honor and privilege going for my 13th birthday.  I was the oldest and my sister and cousins that followed had the same thing - getting her ears pierced and lunch with mom and getting a pretty kiddie cocktail.  We felt quite grown up.

Ditto to both.  I think it looks tacky/trashy.

  • I agree with Kdodge. My baby is not going to require accessorizing.

The "pain" is not noteworthy. I was 8, it was my big birthday gift, and I didn't cry. It hurt for 2 seconds. My bellybutton and for the love of all things holy my tattoo hurt, but ears, no. If I have a daughter, I will wait until she is older.

  • Yes, as soon as my phantom baby girl comes home she will get her ears pierced.  Mine were done when I was a newborn, just before my baptism.  It's a cultural thing (dad is from Brazil) in my family.  DH's culture actually pierces both sexes but I wouldn't do it to a boy in the US because people would most certainly call him a girl.  DH's ears are still pierced but he only wears studs for Hindu religious occassions.

  • My child can choose to get his/her ears pierced in middle school if they want to. It doesn't hurt that badly and I think it looks kind of tacky on babies.
