3rd Trimester

Anyone not planning to buy newborn size diapers?

DH and I both come from families with really big babies -- he and I were each over 8 pounds, and both of our younger brothers were close to 10 pounds.  At my 33 week ultrasound, my baby was projected to be 8 and a half pounds (I know those are notoriously inaccurate though).

Anyway, I have one package (maybe 3 or 4 days worth) of newborn size diapers from my shower.  I want to buy at least one more package of diapers so that no one has to run out when we first come home from the hospital.  I'm trying to decide whether to buy newborn (up to 10 pounds) or size 1 (8 to 14 pounds).

What if my baby comes out at 10 pounds?  Will the newborn size be wasted?  Would it be better to just buy the size 1, which should fit her if she's at least 8 pounds when she's born??

If you already have one pack of newborn diapers on hand, I wouldn't buy anymore newborn diapers yet.   Get size 1 and if you need newborn diapers, your DH can run out and pick some up for you:)  But, if you're going to have a 10 lbs baby, I doubt you'll use very many newborn diapers:)

  • I'd buy size 1. ?I have one pack of newborn diapers and it won't be the end of the world if someone has to run to the store if we need more.

  • I'm in the same boat... I was over 8lbs and was 2 weeks early... DH was right on time, but was an ounce shy of 9lbs.  We have NB diapers only because of the umbilical cord notch that the Pampers Swaddlers have - as far as I know, size 1 doesn't have these...
  • Buy 1's.  Seroiusly.  The hospital should provide you with some newborns.  My dd was just shy of 10lbs when born and we just got 1's when we got home.
  • Go ahead and get the 1s. They will give you diapers at the hospital and then you can send DH or someone else to get diapers in the correct size. Just remember, babies usually drop a bit of weight after they are born. DS was 6lbs 1 oz when he was born and dropped down to 5lbs 5oz. As long as you have one pack of NB, you should be just fine!

  • omg... cant spell... sorry everyone
  • Get 1s. The hospital will also give you some newborn so you should be set.

  • I would go with size 1, considering your histories and the 8 lb + prediction of your baby.  I received 2 packages of newborn diapers at my shower, plus my sister-in-law made me a huge diaper cake using newborn diapers, so I have a ton that I feel may go to waste, though you never know.  Anyway... go for size 1.
  • I agree with pp. I wouldn't buy anymore newborns. Just use the ones that were given and if it turns out that you will need more than you can go to the store and get more. I heard that hospital give diapers. I am not sure all places do.

  • We bought a couple packs of NB, and we received a huge box of NB as a gift, but I can send SO to switch out the size at Wal-Mart as long as the package is unopened. Not really worried about it at all.
  • you can return them to Wal-mart! or K-mart for that matter!
  • Get 1s... unfortunately, we have more NB diapers than we will ever be able to use.

DS was 8 lbs, 9 oz and we used newborns for a couple of weeks.  Just depends on the diaper brand and how they fit.  We took a lot of diapers from the hospital and if we needed more, DH just picked some up.  Don't stress about it-that's what stores are for!

You can always buy a pack and return it for a bigger size if needed.

I have one big case of newborn diapers, and someone gave me a small pack (that she got for free at the hospital) so I'll open the smaller pack and wait and see with the bigger box.

  • Thanks for all the good advice, ladies!

I was kind of expecting people to tell me I was crazy for thinking of buying just size 1.

That's kind of annoying that the size 1 don't have the notch for the umbilical cord -- oh well.  I guess actually fitting the child's little bottom is more important!

  • i have a pack of 40. i think that's what baby bargains recommended. i guess i can have DH run out and get more NB if LO needs them, but besides that, i have size 1s.
  • I have a box of Swaddlers for 8-14lbs babies.  LO was measuring 8lbs 2.5 weeks ago so I am glad I got that size.

  • I had my baby last friday and he was 8lb7oz!  he was 22 inches long though so he is long and skinny!   Size 1 diapers are what they put on him in the hospital but I had NB at home.  The size 1 are gappy around the legs even though he is over 8 lbs!

    NB fit him perfectly!
