What did you do and at what age? I remember something about pp feeding some sort of puff but cant remember what kind it was or how old the little one was. Maybe if she has something she can feed herself I can get to eat my dinner for once.
Bananas are great and so are baked sweet potatoes. Both are so soft they're easily mashed. Messy, but good!
We used puffs as well, until we were confident of her mashing skills and switched to regular cheerios. She only went through one bottle of puffs, thank god, considering how freaking expensive they are!

I don't know if it's recommended or not but I give DS 1/2 a frozen mini bagel to gnaw on.
I'm curious to start researching finger foods because DS is not the least bit interested in me feeding him anything with a spoon but put something in front of him he can get his hands on and it goes straight to his mouth (much like most children I'm sure).
They were the Happy Baby Organic Puffs that I found at whole foods. We don't usually shop there since there isn't one in our town but we got them while out of town. Mady loved them!

We did a 2-pronged approach (both starting at 6 months- I was pretty anal about waiting until 6 months since there really isn't a reason to do it before, and ltos of good reasons to wait).
1. Purees. First puree was mashed avocado, second mashed banana, then onto std. single fruits and veggies (bought the jars).
2. Finger Food ie baby-led weaning. We would give him chunks of stuff that he could hold in his fist and wouldn't be able to choke on, like a slice of avocado, a 3 inch long piece of banana, a slice of apple, etc.
We started just doing lumpier purees, then, when he could handle that, started with bananas as a first finger food. Now, shredded cheese keeps him thoroughly entertained. That's how I was able to vacuum this evening!

For first finger foods, we did tiny pieces of banana, then other soft things like green beans. We did Puffs for a while, then switched to Cheerios like pp said (cheaper!).
As we got more confident in his chewing (gumming?) abilities, we added other small things like little cut up pieces of cheese, toast, pasta, etc. Now he pretty much gets anything we have.
I think bananas are a great first finger food but they are very messy.
