3rd Trimester

How much walking is too much at 39 weeks?

That's what I want to know.  Because I went almost 2 miles this morning and I'm about to hit the neighborhood like a marathon speedwalker to get this baby to come out.  Seriously, though, how much exercise are you full-termers participating in?  I've been walking consistently 5 days a week so I'm in shape for it...I just don't want to overdo it.

  • I walk at least 30 minutes every day

  • I don't know about you but walking up the stairs feels like too much walking for me right now. o.O
  • I listen to my body to tell me when I've done too much.
  • I went on about a mile and a half walk last Thursday and started to have some contractions over the 2nd half of it. On Friday my Dr. expected me to deliver within 24-48hrs (obviously didn't happen) and told me to rest as much as possible instead of walking. I don't think you can really walk too much, just as long as you are getting equal amounts of rest. You don't want to be too tired or sore to deliver.
  • I think your body will tell you what is too much. If you can walk 2 miles and still feel good, go for it!

  • I am at 37 weeks and my dr said it is perfectly safe to keep up my walking routine until the day I deliver.  On any given day I walk 4-7 miles, I am just slower some days than others.  I walk 4 in the morning when I am feeling great and another 3 in the evening if it is nice and I am not too tired.  I have been doing this 6 days a week for quite some time.  Good Luck!
  • In my expert opinion (lol) I'd say that as long as you feel okay while walking and aren't over-exerting yourself, it's fine.  I've also been walking a lot during this pregnancy and don't plan on stopping until he's out!

  • I walk about two miles every evening. I think you just have to listen to your body, if you feel good while doing it and aren't dizzy, dehydrated, etc. then you're good!

That's awesome.  I'm thinking I might go for a second walk tonight so I'm glad to hear someone is doing it and not passing out the second time around!

I was going to add that regardless of being pregnant or not this is my theory.  ::shrugs::

I just want to know: how do you go so long without stopping to pee?

Haha-IDK.  I had a problem for a few weeks but now I just make sure to go right before I leave the house.  I don't time it, but I think it takes about 25 minutes which isn't too bad.  Plus I can always swing around for a pit-stop at the house and head back out if I don't need to.

  • I don't know.  Until 2 weeks ago, when our yard was finally fenced, I was walking probably 45-60 minutes total with the dog per day.  Now I'm just walking him early in the morning and sometimes after dinner, but they're short walks (~10 minutes).

hahaha same. What will we feel like at full term?! Indifferent

  • I think your body will tell you when you're "over doing" it...just make sure and drink lots of cold water to keep hydrated...I dunno about where you are, but it's SUPER HOT here!

Yeah...I don't think once you are full term, you will suddenly be able to overdo it without your body letting you know.. but what do I know?

  • i walked an hour on an incline on the treadmill yesterday then i stretched for 20 minutes.  today i'll do a 1/2 hour, arm weights and stretch for 20.  i've been doing this the whole pregnancy though and it doesn't affect me - if anything it makes me feel better.

    Yep.

Full term or not, your body is still going to let you know when enough is enough.

  • I do at least 30 minutes of dedicated exercise (labor induction) walking a day, but I move around a lot for my job and am generally a busy body. I would say that I walk at least 90 to 120 minutes a day total.

I'd say as long as you are feeling good when and after you do it, walk away!

You're theory is bang on and what any doctor with a credible degree will tell you.

It's like first tri all over again non???

  • I'm jealous you can still go walking! ?I love it - both just to get outside and also the feeling after you exercise. ?My doctor told me at my last apt that I wasn't allowed to go on any more walks because my bp has been steadily increasing and she said with the NOVA heat and humidity it will only get worse with exercise :P
